Alfonzo Dennard Arrested On Suspicion of DUI

Another Patriots player is in the news again, but for a second time this offseason, it is not something positive. Alfonzo Dennard was arrested in Nebraska last night on suspicion of DUI. Dennard is facing three charges with one being driving under the influence. This could be bad news for Dennard, who is on probation for hitting a police officer a few days before the Patriots drafted him in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Police say they stopped Dennard just before 2 a.m. on a Nebraska road. The Police report states that Dennard was alone and was straddling the line in the middle of the road and emitted an odor of alcohol upon contact. Police took him into custody and brought him to Cornhusker Place where he was given a formal breath test. Dennard however, would not provide an adequate breath sample and was released and booked on DUI, refusal of a breath test and straddling the lines.

With Dennard’s history, he could be in trouble not only with the law but the Patriots as well. Dennard was set to spend 30 days in jail in March of 2014 for assaulting a police officer in 2012, but is on probation and was told that if he were to have any more problems with the law, that 30 days in jail could be sooner. With the whirlwind surrounding the Patriots with the Aaron Hernandez case, and the comments that Bob Kraft made earlier in the week, this could mean the end of Dennard in a Patriots uniform.

Dennard was in line to start at corner opposite Aquib Talib this season, and with the trouble the Patriots have had in the secondary in the recent past, this could be a huge hit to them if they were to cut him. It seems like a bit of an overreaction for a player to get cut for DUI, but with Dennard’s history and bad timing with the Hernandez situation, this could be the final straw. The Court date is set for August, and it will be interesting to see the approach that the Patriots and the NFL take with Dennard.
