Connelly’s Top Ten: Red Sox Are Really Likeable

1. Red Sox:

* On a pace to win 97 games

* Koji Uehara has the ugliest glove in Major League Baseball
* Exciting to see Brock Holt read ball in the dirt and take off for second Saturday night

* Is Kirk Gibson sick?
* Corona spending a ton of money on Red Sox broadcasts
* Brandon McCarthy, pitching with the remnants of a fractured skull, missed getting drilled in the head by an inch at the most
* 8.5 inning game that was 4-0 and it was over 3 hours

5. Long baseball games – due to walks?

Experts say that baseball games are longer because of longer counts and more walks – not the case – walks in the American League per game by decade – walks are at their lowest level.

2000’s – 3.23
1990’s – 3.56
1980’s – 3.24
1970’s – 3.29
1960’s – 3.31
1950’s – 3.75
1940’s – 3.72
1930’s – 3.68

6. More Luis Tiant facts:

On September 4, 1973 he was 15-12 he finished the season 20-13 starting six games (three on three days rest) averaging 8.6 innings a start / he won his 20th on 9/28 over Milwaukee 11-2 / game time 2:09

7. Amazing Stats:

NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse hasn’t finished in the Top Ten this year in any race and has earned $3,185,243

8. Old School:

After Jake Peavy’s successful start – 7 innings, 1 run – how about first appearances by other acquired Red Sox:

* Mike Boddicker (7/31/88) – win – 7.1 innings / 8 hits / 0 runs
* Tom Seaver (7/1/86) – win – 7.0 innings / 9 hits / 4 runs

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Former Patriot GM Bobby Grier was the first African American football player to participate in the Sugar Bowl – for Georgia Tech in 1956

10. Randomocity:

* How come the people that mess with Sasquatch stand around to watch their work only to put themselves in inevitable peril
* Went to Bridgeman’s in Hull – nice outdoor patio but food – C
* Dodgers Cubs 1-0 game Sunday took 3:07
* I’m so sick of A Rod talk
* Ideas for reducing game time – pitch clock, can’t leave the box, catchers visit counts as a trip to the mound / don’t throw every baseball out of the game / cut commercials in half and just have a sponsors name on the border of the screen like soccer while game is going
* The surprise isn’t that Johnny Manziel might have been signing improper autographs in violation of the NCAA – the surprise is that he knows how to spell his name
* Why would Clint Dempsey leave the English Premier League to play in Major League Soccer?

  1. Agree about Gibson. He walks as if he is 70 years old. All Star coaching staff the D’Backs have.

    How are the Diamondbacks in playoff contention? Weak lineup with okay pitching. Goldschmidt their only threat.

    Cody Ross had revenge on his mind Friday night.

    Boston should score at least 30 runs vs Houston during this 3 game series.

    Victorino on fire.

    Iglesias homered on Sat. night.

    I’ve had enough of Manziel. Awesome player to watch. He has a personal asst. He’s a walking train wreck.

    Not sold on the Red Sox bullpen before Koji.

    REPLY – MPC – Ross still mad – he is overpaid as is / Victorino was picked as worst free agent signing

  2. -Yes, white flag on A-Rod & Manziel.
    -Why do they throw the balls out after every pitch in the dirt, etc. Waste, plus if you are a pitcher don’t you want the dirtier ball?
    -Pitch clock would be radical (for baseball) but they have to do something.
    -Can’t leave the box is likely the first thing to come.
    -Corona is a bad beer, bad…

    REPLY – MPC – Corona is a summer, outside beer – marketing has got me /

  3. I don’t think Iglesias played 128 games for the Sox at SS in 2012, wasn’t he still in Pawtucket for most of that season?

    reply – mpc – good help

  4. If you think the games are long now, wait until they do replays, it will add another 15 minutes/game. WEEI needs to revamp completely, you mentioned Friday

  5. hey BC – you are correct. Mike Aviles played 128 games at short last year. Iglesias played in 24.
