Connelly’s Top Ten: Labor Day Weekend – Enjoy!

1. Patriots:

* Tebow, Tebow, Tebow – what to do with you
* Imagine paying the same price for that ticket as you would a playoff game?
* Brady didn’t get hurt – that’s all we care about

2. Red Sox:

* Team is 9-9 in Lester’s last 18 starts
* Red Sox top five hitters Thursday night had averages that were all between .294 and .310
* In a 3-2 game – Orioles 140 pitches / Red Sox 178
* 3-2 game in 3:20

3. Not believing in Flutie:

In 1984, Boston College was ranked 19th to start the season – they ended 5th after beating Alabama, North Carolina, Syracuse, Miami

4. John Havlicek:

John Havlicek’s steal in the 1965 Eastern Finals against Philly was called the “$100,000 steal” because of the three games it assured Boston in the finals vs. Lakers

5. Yaz:

Carl Crawford thinks he had it bad – Yaz was benched 10 times in his career for lack of hustle / he was booed mercilessly from 1971-1973 because of play and his high salary of $160,000

6. Can you connect the numbers to local sports events or feats:

* 20
* 3
* 76
* 18
* .406
* 49
* 7
* 19

7. Amazing Stat:

Ted Williams in 1941 when he hit .406:

* Hit .426 vs left handed starters
* Hit .380 on the road
* Hit .405 first half / .406 second half
* Had 44 hits in May
* In August had 10 home runs in 107 at bats
* Struck out 3 times in May – 27 for the year
* Hit .471 vs the Yankees (32-68)
* 147 walks to 27 BB

8. Old School – No Pink Hats in Attendance I guess:

After a Red Sox 14 inning win of 8-7 on July 23, 1947 that ended after the midnight, the Boston Globe wrote the following account: “Thousands of husbands at the game had to explain to the little woman where they were last night.”

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Director of the Clint Eastwood movie Magnum Force said there were 57 different methods of being killed in the movie

10. Randomocity:

* Imagine if Hernandez gets money in the concussion suit
* Great to hear Eck actually get on players for things vs the sugar-coating that’s been going on the last 5 years
* I haven’t mentioned this in a month – what a treat to have Dave O’Brien doing the local broadcast
* It felt like October Thursday night
* Yet another coach (Atlanta Hawks) arrested for DUI
* 30 mile back up on 128 South Thursday night – thanks Patriots

One comment for “Connelly’s Top Ten: Labor Day Weekend – Enjoy!”

  1. Playoff tickets go up in price, not the same as a preseason game.

    Tebow stays, 3rd string qb. Second stringer people should focus on more. What if #12 misses a game or two???

    1984 BC Eagles at Bama (Legion Field). Best part about that game (other than BC win) was Troy Stratford returning opening kickoff as Bicknell is getting interviewed by Tim Brandt. Oh those were the days.

    For the most part Crawford had a free pass in Boston.

    Eck isn’t afraid in that booth.

    Who wins tomorrow night? Georgia or Clemson? Who’s your Heisman winner?

    Clowney was gassed last night. Too much pressure on him going into this year. Reminds me of Bruce Smith.

    REPLY – MPC – Close on Bruce S but a better athlete / I’m not a Clemson fan I think Georgia can make a run and I’m a Murray fan / I remember that game Stratford was great but not that – that is old school
