Connelly’s Top Ten – One Down, Three to Go To Duck Boats

Red Sox thoughts
1. Jon Lester
* When it’s on he has the best lefthander cutter since Al Leiter
* Love the curve ball
* Love the composure – no histrionics on close calls
* Great game despite only throwing 15 of 28 first pitch strikes
2. Ortiz trot
* I have from finished swing to touching home plate at 27.04 for 360 feet / Bolt is under 10 seconds for 300 feet
3. Offense
* You have to make Wainwright throw curve for strike – cold weather favored fast ball pitcher
* Bogaerts two hard hit balls
4. Sorry but not comfortable with Dempster in game even with 8-0 lead
5. Umpires
* Great job meeting to get call right at second
* Lot of look backs at Hirschbeck behind the plate including twice by Victorino who carried on a conversation with umpire
6. Defense
* Drew an expensive poor man’s Mark Belanger
* Victorino had Freese out at first in 9th
7. Stats
* Game time 3:17
* Both teams threw 141 pitches – Cardinals used 6 pitchers
8. Fox Coverage
* Tim McCarver doing the pregame montage – couldn’t find Wakefield or Pedro or Yaz or Gibson?
* The Red Sox honored Medal of Honor winners and it wasn’t shown
9. Just a Little Bit Outside - Interesting Chrysler has Miguel Cabrera doing commercials even though his DUI history
10. Randomocity
* Sound like a spoiled Boston sports fan but how come World Series feel anti-climatic in 2004 / 2007 / 2013
* Drinkwater was on his game of not flinching
* Is the check swing and missing a base the only two calls in sports that umpire sees the proper call but won’t change it unless the other team does the umpires job for them and challenges them?

  1. Last Red Sox lefty to win a World Series game at Fenway? Bruce Hurst prior to last night.

Holliday playing in two World Series’ games at Fenway for two different teams. I would assume that’s a first at Fenway.

This team capitalizes on every mistake the opposition commits. Ask TB and Detroit. The sign of a great team.

How did that umpire miss that call? The drunk in section 1 in the grandstand could see that play.

Game 2 is a must. You don’t want to go to St. Louis tied up with Peavy (last start vs Detroit was awful) and Buchholz and his iffy shoulder.

Tonight’s game might be a classic. Very close game. Extra innings?

REPLY – MPC +- you were right on PEavy –

  2. It appears Lester’s best pitch has a little help. His favorite after game treat…..gooogone.

  3. It seems there is a reason Jon has a black glove. Hide’s his Halloween
    pitching treats.

  4. It is amazing that the umpires can convene to change an obviously erroneous call but can’t see the
green nuclear waste on the webbing of Lester’s glove. Umps got one right and ignored the obvious rules infraction.

REPLY – MPC – with all the cameras could lester be that stupid or desperate or does he know that this is an accepted practice?

  5. Could make an argument that Lester has been the most clutch player on this team in the playoffs. 3-1 with 27.0 innings pitched, 22 strikeouts, 1.79 ERA and opponents hitting just .216.

Having said this, hopefully the pressure gets to rookie Wacha tonight because his playoff numbers have been ridiculous.

Ever since his solo shot against Detroit, Napoli has hit the ball hard.

REPLY – MPC – Napoli in this lineup is looking like Hank Greenberg / Lester has been money – hope he doesn’t bring the goop to the mound
