The Celtics failed to do anything good this week with contests against similar competition in the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans. It was a tough weak because two of those loses combined for a total of four points against the Hawks and Pelicans. The Celtics are now 13-20 and are the ninth seed in the Eastern Conference. They are four games back of the division-leading Toronto Raptors.
Even with being cleared for full-contact practice a couple weeks ago, Rajon Rondo was still very coy of announcing a return date for playing again in real game action.
The Boston Celtics have seemed to been in trouble with out Rondo’s ability to run the game on the court, especially in the fourth quarter of any games.
Rondo has suggested to Brad Stevens that he should rehab with the Maine Red Claws in the D-League and that is very well what they might do in the next couple of weeks. The 27-year-old has not seen much time in practice with five-on-five play, but in the D-League he would see that quite often. He would be able to get back into the flow of a game and it should lead to attention for many NBA teams in the need of a point guard.
Stevens would be smart to put Rondo with the Red Claws until he can provide a full 100 percent to this Celtics team. In the meantime, just let the other players show off their value and whether the teams should keep them or let them go.
After leading the division for nearly half a month, the Celtics have fallen fast, including loses in six of their last seven games. The lone win came Saturday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
With the losses, the Celtics are out of the playoff race currently and could fall even further behind with the tough road trip coming up. The next five games are against good teams in the Western Conference. This road trip will make or break the Celtics tank season and if they lose all of them then it could be time to ship some of the other pieces away.
Over the next week, the Celtics will play the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors.
With such a tough slate this week, the Celtics will have trouble finding wins and it will be tankapalloza talk until Rondo can come back.
