First Setback for Red Sox? Jake Peavy Cuts Finger with Fishing Knife

Peavy's injury could take a bite into the pitching depth (Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

In what was described as a “freak accident” by manager John Farrell, Jake Peavy has been scratched from his next start due to a laceration on his left index finger. The injury happened while using a fishing knife and should set Peavy back about three days or so.

Farrell also mentioned that the injury could have been much worse as Peavy almost cut through the entire finger. This is the second finger related injury to Peavy this Spring as he was set back at the beginning of camp with an ailment to his right ring finger.┬áBrandon Workman will be taking Peavy’s rotation slot on Monday.

Peavy’s injury also accentuates the importance of pitching depth. With Dempster gone, pitchers such as Workmand and Capuano will be relied upon heavily as the natural attrition of pitching happens during the season. This injury is early enough in the spring that it should not warrant too much worry, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on as Peavy has been prone to injury in the past.

Hopefully, this minor injury will be the only setback the Red Sox face this spring and upcoming season, but knowing baseball that will certainly not the case. As they always say, you can never have enough pitching and Peavy is proving that right now.
