Aaron Hernandez Indicted on 2012 Double Homicide

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been indicted on two first degree murder charges in the shooting deaths of two men in 2012.

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was indicted on two counts of first degree murder in the 2012 South End double homicide on Thursday. Police have been investigating Hernandez’s role and connection to the murders since his arrest last summer for the murder of Odin Lloyd.

During a press conference, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley revealed details of the case including how the victims Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado were basically ambushed by Hernandez and were just innocent victims with no gang affiliations, as previously assumed. Conley also said there is no evidence suggesting Hernandez even knew the victims before the night of the murder.

The murder of the two men is believed to have started in a Boston nightclub where Hernandez and the victims allegedly had a dispute over a spilled drink. After the men left the nightclub, Hernandez followed the men in his SUV and when the victims’ car was stopped at a red light, Hernandez drove up and opened fire into the car. According to Conley, the two men were “stalked, ambushed and senselessly murdered on the streets of the city they call home.”

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans called the murders a “chance encounter where two young men were out at the nightclub, and …had an encounter that led to obviously their deaths.”

Police have since recovered the SUV driven by Hernandez on the night of the murder at his uncle’s house during the Lloyd murder investigation. Hernandez was also seen on surveillance footage in the nightclub on the night of the murders. Earlier in the year, one of the survivors identified Hernandez as the shooter. These are just the few pieces of evidence the District Attorney has gathered against Hernandez.

Hernandez was also charged with three counts of assault with attempt to murder because three other men were in the victims’ vehicle.

Hernandez’s lawyers did not have much to say except that “It is one thing to make allegations at a press conference, and another thing to prove them in a courtroom. Unlike the District Attorney, we are not going to try this case in the media. Under our system of justice, Aaron Hernandez is innocent of these charges, and he looks forward to his day in court.”

Hernandez is expected to plead not guilty and this case will not move forward until the Lloyd case is resolved.
