Connelly’s Top Ten: Obama Must Not Be Great GM in Fantasy Baseball

Barack Obama

1. Cliff “Robertson” Notes:

* Red Sox are 0-3 with Stephen Drew on the roster
* If Kevin Love doesn’t come here – could this weekend been playing with us
* The last 40 seconds in the first game of NHL Stanley Cup was electric
* Horse racing is desperate for a Triple Crown

2. NFL players with great numbers that didn’t do it for me:

* Emmitt Smith
* Drew Bledsoe
* Jerome Bettis
* Tony Romo
* Eric Moulds
* Jason Taylor

3. Ellsbury:

Jacoby Ellsbury is on pace for 49 stolen bases – the Red Sox are on pace for 49 stolen bases

4. In honor of the worst trade ever:

One American solider of question for five ruthless punks that hate us:

* Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater
* Andy Moog for Bill Ranford
* Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson
* Leon Gray for a first and sixth round pick
* Joe Thornton for players
* Paul Westphal for 1st round pick
* Babe Ruth…..

5. Stephen Drew is now 6 for his last 60

6. Our monthly trip to Vegasinsider.com:

* I like Italy at 25-1 (but I’m picking Germany)
* Patriots 10-1 to won Super Bowl
* Red Sox 18-1 to win World Series
* % of Major Leaguers juicing at least 60% (that was mine)

7. Amazing Stats:

Pedro’s combined 1999-2000 seasons:

* Every first place vote in both year’s Cy Youngs
* 41-10
* 597 K to 69 BB (8.65)
* WHIP 0.825

8. Old School:

In honor of Don Zimmer’s passing, here are some 1978 fun facts:

* Jim Rice: 46 HR / 15 3b / 25 2b / 208 hits / 139 RBI / 406 total bases
* Hobson, Burleson, Remy and Scott combined for 81 errors
* Bob Stanley (age 23) was 15-2 with 10 saves
* Luis Tiant had 5 shutouts at age 37 (probably 47)
* Jim Rice had 746 plate appearances
* Scott, Rice, Burleson, Hobson and Evans hit into a combined 80 double plays
* April 11-9 / May 23-7 / June 18-7 / July 13-15 / August 19-10 / Sept 14-15 / October 1-1

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

In honor of a real American hero – Medal of Honor winner Michael Perkins of Boston (buried in Mattapan) – his citation from World War I:

He, voluntarily and alone, crawled to a German “pill box” machinegun emplacement, from which grenades were being thrown at his platoon. Awaiting his opportunity, when the door was again opened and another grenade thrown, he threw a bomb inside, bursting the door open, and then, drawing his trench knife, rushed into the emplacement. In a hand-to-hand struggle he killed or wounded several of the occupants and captured about 25 prisoners, at the same time silencing 7 machine guns

10. Randomocity:

* In the “How do you like those apples” scene in Good Will Hunting why didn’t Affleck drop the Harvard punk?
* Red Sox drafted Matt Young in the 2nd round of 1978
* If Nixon gets impeached for pushing record at some meeting how is releasing mass murderers legal – things that make me go hmm

About Michael

Lifelong Boston resident who finds equal enjoyment in celebrating the local team's success as I do complaining about their failures. I have been writing the Top Ten for the last decade as well as five sports books: 26 Miles to Boston, Rebound, The President's Team, The Great Book of Boston Sports Lists and NBA List Jam.

  1. If they are mass murders, why weren’t they tried in court according to US law? Things that definitely make you go hmm…

  2. Nobody is a Medal of Honor winner, they are Medal of Honor recipients.

  3. Hey Alan
    Are you suggesting these guys aren’t as bad as advertised? Why would they be tried in US courts? Are you suggesting they should get attorneys from the ACLU and a dream team of anti death penalty crusaders?
    They’ve been treated with kid gloves down in Gitmo where even the toilets were repositioned so they would never face Mecca. There are 100 medical staffers on site for 150 detainees. Compare that to the way our own vets are being treated by the VA.
    These guys were there for a reason. This president is either enormously incompetent or worse, did this because of ideology. He said he wanted Gitmo closed so he’ll let the detainees that his own administration categorized as the 5 worst actors there go and call it an exchange. Other than Susan Rice, who the hell could defend this?

  5. The Bagwell trade was because we had the up & coming Scott Cooper at third. UGH!!

    Also worst trade politically, i agree, mainly because a precendant has been set on what a military life is worth to the terrorists. I would not want to be a politician overseas, they just got put on the block as potentially taken
