Connelly’s Top Ten: Surf’s Up!

1. Cliff Notes:

* Weekend is here – old beer list Schlitz, Narraganset,
* There is not one Sox other than Pedroia I wouldn’t trade
* Rumors of Tiger’s PED use starting to be heard
* Imagine the level you must lower yourself to beg these NBA stars to come to your team?
* I can’t believe that the Pats have Revis

2. World Cup:

* You gotta give me some love for picking Germany-Argentina final before the tournament – with Germany winning
* Having seen so much diving since Wide World of Sports (refs are giving it less late in tourney)
* Is Michael Ballack and other hard to understand analysts going to be doing Sports Center after the tourney?
* Now what do you look forward to in Brazil?

3. Red Sox – Averages of highest paid Red Sox:

Napoli……..$16mm………….265
Ortiz………..$15.5mm……….258
Victorino….$13mm………….242
Pedroia……$12.8mm……….279
Drew……….$10mm………….128
Pierzynski..$8.2mm………….254
Gomes…….$5mm……………239

4. Speaking of bad Red Sox:

Is Ben Cherrington sitting on one of the worst GM years in baseball history?

* Drew – brings back when they are hot – they immediately go on losing streak
* Pierzynski – reputation for bad guys who was on the back nine and he certainly was
* Napoli – Signs him to big money deal not knowing you got the best of him last year (similar to the post 2007 Mike Lowell signing)
* Sizemore – Gave him center field job after five-year absence – eventually cut
* Capuano – 4.55 ERA – cut
* Mujica – 5.61 ERA for almost $5mm

5. Celtics trade:

A blockbuster by Danny that leads to a championship puts him in the rafters

6. Tigers, Angels:

The Tigers and the Angels on the same night both scored 15 runs and had 17 hits

7. Amazing Stat:

If you extrapolated this year’s season over a full year – the Red Sox have average 79 wins over the last three years (one year being a World Series)

8. Old School:

This is the worst three-year stretch since 1991-1992-1993 when the Sox won 73 / 80 / 54 (Butch Hobson anyone)

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Enrollment of football and hockey champs

* Florida State, 40,838, Alabama 31,647, Auburn 20,175 LSU 29,718
* Union 2,241, Yale 5,405, BC 14,400 , Minnesota Duluth 10,680

10. Randomocity:

* You think the league reached out to LeBron and said make a decision
* Top student body for a college in the country – University of Phoenix 307,871
* The Celtics better not bring back the head band
* Will this be the moment in time that we will look back to and say America’s fate was compromised by the open borders?
* Ichiro up over .300

  1. No, but we might be able to say that America’s fate was compromised by Fox “News”.

    REPLY – MPC – That’s right – I saw the Fox News jackets on those guys raiding the embassy

  2. Pedroia would be the first one I’d trade. He’s on the dark side of 30, his performance is in clear decline, and you’ve got the best 2B prospect in baseball all ready to go. Pull the trigger now so you won’t be eating that contract in 3-4 years. Ask yourself this: what would Belichick do?

    Also, how about Shaefer?

    REPLY – MPC – I love that shaefer ad with the iced beer mug – Pedroia is more about culture than results at this time

  3. It’s all about perspective. Sox won it all last year and between $ coming off the books next year and promising system they could be back in the mix very quickly. Count me as a happy Sox fan no matter the record this year.

    REPLY – MPC – I actually have no problem with this – I would rather they have a $100mm payroll and build 25 baseball fields around Boston with their surplus

  4. Alan,

    What the crud is wrong with you? You have such an inability to look at facts that it’s scary. You go back to the old standby
    - blame Fox News. Are you saying that this isn’t a story? Like the IRS, Benghazi, Fast and Furious – the border is a big story. You and your progressive anti-traditionalist crowd crowd can bury your heads if you want to, but it doesn’t change the facts.

    You’ll follow this guy off of whatever cliff he wants to lead you off. I’d love to hear your take if a conservative Republican used the IRS as his foil against people or groups that disagreed with his conservative viewpoints.

    I’m pretty sure that you’d think that it was a big story then. Heck – I’m sure that MSNBC would be right there with you. Are you even aware that the document dump that the White House pulled on July 3rd produced some pretty damning email and instant messaging evidence from Lois Lerner? Even Chris Matthews lost the thrill up his leg over the weekend. A smoking gun can do that. Apparently you haven’t, though. Do you know who Justice put in charge of the “investigation”? Look it up – it’s scary.

    It’s no longer a secret, Alan, the mainstream press is in the tank. Fox News tells us what’s going on. There is a reason why people are turning off the other channels. Wake Up!

    REPLY – MPC – They don’t want to hear facts – it doesn’t fit their argument – it will be a problem for them if it impacts them

  5. Whack job tea-bagger cospiracy theorist even make their way into obscure sports blogs. Good for you.

    REPLY – MPC – those things didn’t happen?

  6. Thatta boy, El Presidente. Lob a perjorative, present no facts or argument, dismiss anything that you disagree with as a whacky conspiracy…Saul Alinsky would be proud of you.

    Here’s to hoping that the IRS takes a peak at you some day. Even the mainstream press has now had to admit that something is very wrong there, but you and Alan should stick to your opinions. Don’t ever let pesky facts get in your way.

  7. I would trade Pedrioa… He’s supposed to be a LEADER???? Really… his stats have been circling the drain for 3 straight years now…

    REPLY – MPC – I knew Youk with his body would be a fast fall wonder if PEdroia’s body will betray him
