Connelly’s Top Ten: All-Star Game Week… Time to go to Movies

1. Cliff Notes:

* Tiger Woods is second in odds in Vegas to win the British Open
* Brilliant no lose move by Lebron and he picks up $21mm a year
* Tour de France – 90% juice?

2. World Cup:

I was right (I never get to say it so….)

* You will be happy to hear that this is the last World Cup update
* Almost half the games in the elimination round had no goals in regulation
* Brazil most over-rated team since any Dean Smith team
* Still can’t believe how many players miss the net
* FIFA should rate the biggest divers the tourney and suspend them

3. Red Sox Stuff:

* Brock Holt – 5 hits – wow!
* Why is Stephen Drew still getting at bats
* Speaking of Drew – catcher Vazquez has as many RBI as the overpaid shortstop (5-5) oh ya – 93 at bats to 11
* Why is fragile Buchholz pitching in the 7th with an 8-0 lead, nevermind the 9th
* Ortiz is on pace for 34 HR / 109 RBI season
* If you were to prorate Vazquez’s 5 RBI over a 500 at bat season he would have 227 RBI
* Globe said people are looking at Napoli – in a second I’d let him go
* Boston are 8 games out of wildcard
* Only Ortiz is on pace to have more than 61 RBI
* No Red Sox is on pace to have more than 10 stolen bases
* Lackey has already matched his win total from last year with 10 even though his ERA is higher

4. Celtics:

(would you do Sullinger, Bradley and two first round picks for Kevin Love?)

Center – Zellner, Olynyk, Faverani
Forward – Bass, Green, Sullinger, Wallace
Guard – Rondo, The $32mm Kid Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart, Thornton, Young

2015 – Three first round picks
2016 – Three first round picks
2017 – One pick (and the right to swap with Brooklyn)
2018 – Two first round picks

5. At the All Star Break:

* Not really the halfway mark – Even though its All Star break some teams have played 97 games of 60% of the season
* 16 teams over .500 (11 in the top half of payroll) – Seattle, Oakland, Pirates, Milwaukee, KC
* Miguel Cabrera is on pace for his third straight 135-RBI-plus season (has only missed 52 games in last 11 seasons)

6. Hank Aaron home run stuff:

* Hit two off Red Sox
* 17 off Don Drysdale
* Only had one three home run game (61 two home run games)
* One inside the park
* Only 57 opposite field

7. Amazing Stats:

Not ONE hitter in the top 477 in at bats in the National League has more walks than strike outs!

8. Old School:

When contact mattered

1945 – 33 of the top 50 in at bats had more walks than strike outs

1975 – 15 of top 50
1985 – 14 of top 50
1995 – 6 of top 50
2005 – 4 of top 50

2001 – Planet of the Apes – $180mm
2011 – Rise of the Planet of the Apes – $176mm
2014 – Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – $73mm

10. Randomocity:

* Al Gore should throw out the first pitch at the All-Star game – predicting coldest all star game in over three decades
* How did the Bruins ever pick Wilmington to practice?
* How did the Celtics ever pick Hellenic College?
* Brady is not a top ten quarterback – why the commotion

  1. Climate = the weather tomorrow in Minneapolis. By that logic, if I can find one person in the world who is making less money this year than last, that means the global economy is tanking. Michael, are you purposely as ignorant as possible? Does that somehow make you feel smarter and better than everyone else?
