World Series Cardinals Red Sox Baseball Red Sox Sign Koji Uehara to 2-Year, $18 Million Deal Connelly’s Top Ten: Just Enjoy! "Pro Wrestling," NES 2014 MLB Playoffs Expert Picks: World Series Results Rajon Rondo (Winslow Townson/USA Today Sports) Celtics, Rondo impress in Season Opener

Connelly’s Top Ten: Koufax Vs. Gibson / Post 20 K / Legos

David Ortiz, Yaz

1. Cliff Notes:

* Good that Red Sox are struggling so they aren’t fooled into being buyers this week
* Is Brady facing Revis every day like a lefty hitter facing a drop down lefty batting practice pitcher – could it create bad habits?
* I bet Lucic uses cruise control a lot on his car
* Celtics won’t win 38 games this year with the current roster

2. Ortiz vs. Yaz debate:

* OBP .379 to .379
* Batting Average .285 to .285
* Ortiz – 55 pounds heavier
* Ortiz was born just six weeks after Yaz flew out to center field to end the 1975 World Series
* Yaz intentionally walked 190 times to Ortiz 172
* Yaz 3 batting titles / MVP / 7 Gold Gloves

3. Rookie hits:

Brock Holt is on a run to Rookie of the Year votes – how does he match up with Red Sox who won the Rookie of the Year:

PLAYER…..G…….HITS…AVG ..D…T…HR
Holt……….108 / 140 / .312 / 29 / 6 / 5
Pedroia….139 / 165 / .317 / 39 / 1 / 8
Nomar…..153 / 209 /.306 / 44 /11 / 30
Lynn………145 / 175 / .331 / 47 / 7 / 21
Fisk………..131 /134 / .293 / 28 / 9 / 22

4. Tampa attendance:

Great lefty match up with an nasty edge to it in Tampa Bay Friday night between Jon Lester and David Price and Tampa only drew 23,136. The last time the Red Sox drew under 30,000 – September 25, 2001 – Orioles beat the Joe Kerrigan Red Sox as the Orioles scored 7 runs off Frank Castillo in the first four innings

5. Lot of talk about speeding up the game:

One item is immediate pass to first base on an intentional walk – so far in the Majors there have been 630 intentional walks this year

6. Greats vs. Greats:

Sandy Koufax vs. Bob Gibson:

* 7/03/63 – Dodgers won 5-0 (Koufax 9 K / Gibson 3) – 51,898 in 1:53
* 6/18/62 – Dodgers won 1-0 (Koufax 9 K / Gibson 8) – 33,477 in 2:18
* 4/26/66 – Dodgers won 4-2 (Koufax 8 K / Gibson 6) – 25,121 in 2:14
* 5/25/61 – Dodgers won 1-0 (Koufax 8 K / Gibson 6) – 6,878 in 2:14 again

7. Amazing Stats:

Game after striking out 20

* Randy Johnson – 5 days later 5/13/01 – 145 pitches / 12 K / 8 innings
* Roger Clemens – 5 days later 5/4/86 – 10 K / 8 innings
* Roger Clemens – 5 days later 9/23/96 – 8 K / 7 innings
* Kerry Wood – 5 days later 5/11/98 – 107 pitches / 13 k / 7 innings

8. Old School:

Leading receivers for receptions on the 1976 Patriots:

29 – Andy Johnson
27 – Sam Cunningham
26 – Russ Francis
17 – Darryl Stingley
12 – Don Calhoun

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Lego Dynasty

* They produce more tires than any other organization in the world
* They own the Eye in London
* They have made enough lego pieces to give every person in the world 80 pieces

10. Randomocity:

* The Popsicle was first sold in 1923
* The roof top bar at Fiore in the North End is a nice take
* When it comes to dumping stars and picking up prospects I would prefer Theo
* Marcus Smart is shooting 29% in the summer league against his peers – is Antoine Walker or Rick Robey his shooting coach?
* Cardinals beat the Cubs 1-0 Sunday – Game time 2:41

  1. I agree the games are too long and something needs to change but eliminating the intentional walk is too superficial. Only happens in roughly 40% of games and how much time does it actually take? Need to get to the root cause. Prevent exiting the batters box, put a time clock on pitchers and that would have much more impact. Will not be done though because Selig and owners do not care about the future of the game. Just current profit. Game will be virtually dead in 20 years. Remember Digital and Polaroid were flying high once too. Things change.

  3. Was in Tampa Monday, listening to sports talk (98.7). Ortiz rivalry, big deal down there, lots of callers. Also they were doing back flips about how “BIG” the crowd was compared to other games and how it helped them by having the big crowds. Main reason they like big crowds is when no crowds, you can actually hear people talking in background and conversations, geez is that F’d up

    REPLY – MPC – MLB should take the franchise away – disgraceful and a good team with a great coach
