Ryan Mallett to Start Patriots Pre-Season Opener

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported this morning that Patriot’s quarterback Ryan Mallett will start tonight’s pre-season opener against the Washington Redskins. Mallett is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and tonight could serve as an audition of sorts.

With Jimmy Garoppolo in the mix, it doesn’t look likely that Mallett will return to New England next season. He could be a target of a team looking to trade for a starting quarterback as a result of a pre-season injury.

Tonight will be a chance for Mallett to play with the starting offense, and it’s probable that he’ll play the entire first half. With Brady not suiting up, that will allow Jimmy Garoppolo, who has struggled in camp, to play the second half.

Mallett has struggled at times in past pre-season outings, but those around the Patriots have said that Mallett looks better than ever so far in camp.

Interesting information about Mallett’s off-season emerged this week. He spent time in Minnesota working out with Arizona Cardinals receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Roberts. Perhaps Fitzgerald is already recruiting Mallett to be his quarterback next season. Tonight will be a chance for Mallett to show his skills to the other 31 NFL teams.
