Jim Nance Named to Patriots Hall of Fame

Patriots fans have cast their votes. Today, the Patriots announced that fullback Jim Nance has earned the honor of becoming the 14th player and the first running back to be inducted into the team’s hall of fame.

Nance played for the Patriots from 1965-1971, and was named to the Pro Bowl twice. He finished his career with 5,401 yards on 1,341 attempts (4.0 yards/carry).

Magic-Celtics Game 7 Sets Cable TV Record

Game 7 of the Magic-Celtics series is the most-viewed NBA second-round playoff game ever on cable. TNT says Orlando’s 101-82 win Sunday was watched by 8.41 million viewers. The previous record was 7.65 million for Game 6 of Spurs-Lakers in 2004.

Tim Thomas a Finalist for Vezina Trophy

Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild, Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins are the finalists for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender. The league announced the finalists Monday.

The winner, voted by general managers around the league, will be revealed June 18 at the NHL awards show in Las Vegas.

Tim Thomas finished with a 36-11-7 record and five shutouts during the regular season with a 2.10 GAA and a .933 SV%.

Zdeno Chara a Finalist for Norris Trophy

Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, Mike Green of the Washington Capitals and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings are finalists for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman.

The league announced the finalists Thursday and the winner will be revealed June 18. Lidstrom is seeking his seventh Norris and fourth in a row.

The 6’9″ defenseman finished with 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points this season for the B’s.

Reaction: It would be great if Chara could grab the award, but it will be hard to unseat Lidstrom. I think it’s a nice honor for Chara to be considered, but at this point they might as well rename the award to the “Lidstrom Trophy.” Come on Zdeno!

Lucic Suspended for Game 3

Boston left winger Milan Lucic was suspended for a game by the NHL on Sunday for a blow to the head on Montreal’s Maxim Lapierre in the Bruins’ Game 2 victory Saturday night in Boston. Lucic was assessed a match penalty for high-sticking with 4:32 left in the game.

“While it is unclear whether Lucic’s glove or stick makes contact with Lapierre, what is clear is that he delivered a reckless and forceful blow to the head of his opponent,” said Colin Campbell, the NHL’s senior executive vice president of hockey operations.”

As a result, Lucic will miss Monday’s Game 3 against the Canadiens.

Ray Allen Suspended for Elbowing Varejao

The NBA has suspended Boston guard Ray Allen one game without pay for elbowing Cleveland forward Anderson Varejao in the groin.

The players got tangled under the basket after a free throw with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter of the Cavaliers’ 107-76 victory on Sunday.

Varejao flung Boston’s guard to the floor, and Allen responded with his elbow.

Red Sox Put Lowrie on DL

The Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left wrist before their game against the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. Lowrie was sent to Boston for tests to determine the extent of the injury.

“We want to be more conclusive with what’s going on,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Seal to Sing National Anthem on Opening Day

Grammy Award winner Seal will sing the national anthem at the Boston Red Sox season opener. The Red Sox take on the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays on Monday at Fenway Park.

According to the AP, Seal is in town that day as part of his North American tour in support of his latest album SOUL.

New D-League Team in Maine: The Red Claws

Maine’s new NBA Development League team has a name: the Maine Red Claws.

The name, true to the state’s lobster tradition, was announced Thursday by team president and general manager Jon Jennings on The Big Jab sports radio station.

The Red Claws plan to unveil their logo in the near future.

Reaction: I guess it makes sense considering the lobster tradition, but come on, the Red Claws? They couldn’t come up with something better? Why not the Maineiacs, or something to do with the Celtics (since the C’s are the most-likely NBA affiliate).

Kraft Inducts Billy Sullivan into Patriots Hall of Fame

Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft has inducted the franchise’s original owner, Billy Sullivan, into the Patriots Hall of Fame as a contributor, according to Patriots.com

Sullivan is the first contributor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, which was previously comprised of 13 players, with a 14th to be selected by fans in 2009.

Reaction: This is a nice gesture by Kraft. Sullivan never made the Patriots a winner, but he was the original owner when the Pats were in the AFL, so it’s nice to see his efforts are being recognized today.
