In the wake of Doc Rivers departure, Danny Ainge has maintained that the Celtics would take their time in choosing the next head coach of the team…until today.

This afternoon, the Celtics announced that they have hired former Butler University head basketball coach, Brad Stevens, to be the new coach of the team.

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett (Matt Stone)

It was only a matter of time before the Boston Celtics decided to completely move forward from the “big three era”. After sending Doc Rivers to the Clippers on Sunday, Adrian Wojnarowski reports  the Celtics have agreed to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets that would send future Hall of Famers, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, along with Jason Terry to the Nets for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, Tomike Shenglia, Reggie Evans, Keith Bogans and future first round draft picks in 2014, ’16, and ’18.

Garnett agreed to waive his no trade clause after the Nets agreed to pay the remaining $12 Million on the third year of his deal in 2014-2015 season. The deal will not be made official until July 10th, following the NBA’s moratorium period.

After weeks of wondering what the future of the Boston Celtics would look like, and the recent on-and-off discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers, the new era of the Celtics begins.

According to multiple sources, including ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan and Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Doc Rivers and the Clippers have agreed to send an unprotected 2015 first round draft pick to the Celtics in exchange for Boston releasing Rivers from the three years remaining on his five-year, $35 million dollar contract. The Clippers will then sign Rivers for an identical three years, $21 million. Continue reading Celtics Start Rebuilding, Give Doc Rivers to the Clippers »

Spurs on the Brink: What now, Pop?

June 20, 2013 at 9:00am in NBA, Opinion
(CNN.com)

On the brink of winning their fifth NBA title in the Tim Duncan era, the San Antonio Spurs did not only cough up their best shot of taking down the defending champions in Miami, they may have already lost Game 7 too.

Up five with just under 30 seconds left in regulation, the Spurs trotted out Duncan-less on Miami’s following possession. After LeBron misfired on his first three-point attempt, San Antonio was a defensive rebound away of just about wrapping up the Finals, with the  potential of going up three possessions resulting from some made free-throws with around 20 seconds remaining.

Then, everything fell apart.

The Boston Globe reports that the scaled down version of the Celtics and Clippers mega deal is also off the table now. Danny Ainge himself has called the deal, ‘dead’, and still expects Doc Rivers to coach the Celtics next season.

News broke Saturday that a deal that would send Rivers, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Clippers for DeAndre Jordan, Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler was near completion. Talks broke down when the Clippers became reluctant to include Bledsoe in the trade. The two teams resumed negotiations on Monday morning when the Celtics said the Clippers could take Bledsoe off the table if they were willing to take back the contracts of Jason Terry and Courtney Lee. The Clippers once again determined that this was not an option for them.

Miami defends their title against San Antonio. Who will reign supreme? (AP Photo)

The Finals are upon us. LeBron James leads the Heat in their title defense against Tim Duncan and the Spurs. The Heat have the stars, but San Antonio has the rest. Indiana did give Miami all they could handle and then some, so what could a wily group of veterans like San Antonio do?

Either way, it looks to be a difficult series, with all our experts picking it to go the full seven games. The Heat are favored, but the well-rested Spurs are getting attention as well. That will make for an exciting final round, for sure.

In addition to the usual scoring categories, we’re also picking the Finals MVP for this last round, and in addition, all point values are doubled!! Therefore, picking the winner of a series is worth four points, while picking how may games each series will last is worth two points. Picking the MVP is also worth two points.

Also, in the event any of our experts finish tied in the final standings, we’re also picking the combined point total of Miami’s Big Three (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh) in the final game of the series. Whoever guesses closest, above or below, will get the nod.

So check below for everyone’s picks, and come back once the Finals are complete for the final results and standings. Continue reading 2013 NBA Playoffs Expert Picks: NBA Finals »
