If you saw the U.S. – Algeria game, you saw Landon Donovan score in the 92nd minute to lift the Americans to a 1-0 win. The U.S. has won their group for the first time since 1930.

USA Gets the Draw, World Cup In Sight

As the names of countries were being drawn today to determine the World Cup, many American’s held their breath to see where their team would be placed. Once they missed out on the South Africa group, one thing was known, The United States would be placed with a world soccer power. What happened was a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

The United States will meet England in the first matchup. Later their group was joined by Algeria, making their third world cup appearance. During the fourth pool, Portugal’s name was still floating around and there were expectations that they would join the US and England to create the “Group of Death”. For the sake of the USA, Slovenia was the final team in their group.

UNITED STATES IN GROUP C

The United States took a sigh of relief with the drawings of Algeria and Slovenia, but nothing is a given. Their opponents are tough and earned a spot in their tournament and will do anything to keep moving on. Expect big thing and exciting games in the first group for the USA.

ENGLAND:

Everyone will be talking about David Beckham, but he’s no guarantee to even make the team. England’s head coach, Fabio Capello, has done everything to make this the most impressive squad in England’s history and if he feel Beckham is a weak link, then he will leave Beck’s off the team. Lead by Wayne Rooney, England dominated it’s UEFA group to be ranked 9th in the world and have a number one seed in group play. The World Cup champions in 1966, England will look to advance past the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990, when they finished fourth. Quick fact, the United States has a victory over England in the World Cup during the 1950 tournament in Brazil.

ALGERIA:

The Desert Foxes will be making their return to the World Cup after a 24 year absence. After beating Egypt in November, Algeria secured it’s first World Cup bid since 1986. The 28th ranked team in the world, Algeria will prove they are not a push over. Rafik Saifi will try to lead his country and bring them to a place where they’re never been before, the Round of 16.

SLOVENIA:

Since the split of Yugoslavia, Slovenia has made tremendous strides in soccer and are looking for big things with their second World Cup bid. In their first World Cup appearance, they didn’t win a game in group play and were left with their heads hung low. After failing to qualify in 2006, they are back and looking to redeem themselves. They will get their chance drawing Algeria first, then will have to do all they can to topple the USA and England.

THE ROAD TO THE WORLD CUP BEINGS NOW:

June 12th, 2009. The United States will being their path against England in Rustenburg, South Africa. It has been over half a decade since these teams have last met in a World Cup game. There are big things expected for the USA and everything begins now. See you in South Africa.
