If you’re a Red Sox fan, there’s one thing you know for sure. “Yankees Suck!” Even if they were to go undefeated for an entire season, end world hunger, and save a family of kittens from a burning building, the Yankees still suck. Yet, most fans will admit that the rivalry is all in good fun and at the end of the day it’s just a game. So what do you get when you mix alcohol, mob mentality and baseball’s oldest and most bitter rivalry?

Unfortunately, a few New Hampshire residents found out the answer to this question on Saturday. According to the Boston Globe, Ivonne Hernandez, a Yankees fan, drove her car into a small crowd of Red Sox fans, killing 29-year-old Matthew Beaudoin. Hernandez is a 43-year-old mother who’s originally from New York, but has lived in Nashua for 6 years. She got into a fist fight with 21-year-old Maria Hughes in a parking lot after leaving Slade’s Food & Spirits. Hernandez went to her car, where the group saw a Yankees’ sticker and began the familiar “Yankees Suck” chant. She pulled out of her parking spot aggressively, almost hitting a man, and drove approximately 200 feet before turning around and speeding up into the group. Beaudoin later died at Lahey Clinic in Burlington of head trauma. Hughes sustained minor injuries. Hernandez was arrested on charges of reckless conduct, aggravated drunken driving, and second-degree murder.

My take: Clearly, being a Yankees fan was not this woman’s only problem. I don’t know how someone with children would be reckless enough to drink and drive, let alone drive into a crowd of people. Apparently her lawyer says that she thought the people would move out of the way. Well, that makes sense, but the people in the crowd probably also assumed she wouldn’t drive into them. It’s such a shame that a few bad people have to turn in innocent fun rivalry into something reckless. Seriously, it’s just a game. Calm down.
