When in Rome…Celtics over Raptors

Paul Pierce led all scorers with 21 points (8-14) and Kevin Garnett added 16 rebounds in his Celtics debut as the C’s beat the Toronto Raptors 89-85 in the first 2007 preseason contest for both teams. The Celtics are now 1-0 in the preseason, while the loss brings the Raptors’ record to 0-1.

Pierce and new teammates Garnett, Ray Allen, and Eddie House all scored in double figures. PG Rajon Rondo added 6 assists in 25 minutes and center Kendrick Perkins grabbed 7 rebounds in 23 minutes. (Full box score from

What they said:

Celtics coach Doc Rivers

“Even when he doesn’t have a good shooting night, Ray spreads the floor. And that is of such big value. He’s capable at any time of getting it and that fear is why the floor is spread so well and the space he allows has a value on the floor.”

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett

“Doc told us we weren’t going to play a lot of minutes tonight. So he wanted us to go really hard, extremely hard and play as if it was a real game. It was a hot gym, a great atmosphere for a game of basketball and I just came out with a lot of energy.”

Raptors forward Chris Bosh

“The Celtics are going to be tough, especially when they get their post game going.”

Game Notes:

  • It was nice to see Pierce, Garnett, and Allen on the same floor at the same time. Early indications are that the Big Three won’t have problems sharing the basketball. Pierce (14), Garnett (16), Allen (13) all attempted roughly 15 shots. If the scoring distribution can remain like that all season (except with more shot attempts and minutes), then the Celtics will be a force. They will get more minutes in regular season play, but in this preseason game all three sat out the fourth quarter.
  • Eddie House played extremely well off the bench, scoring 14 points (6-10) in a span of 22 minutes played. He connected twice from beyond the arc as well (2-5). The C’s hoped House would be a prolific three-point specialist off the bench. If he can score that much that quickly during the season, he will give the C’s a HUGE boost offensively.
  • Kendrick Perkins was impressive at times on the glass, and it seems that Garnett is going to be a big help. Garnett grabbed 16 boards and he grabbed 7. If those two up front can combine for 20 rebounds per night, the C’s will be in very good shape on the defensive side and would be able to get some second chances on the offensive end as well.
  • The new uniforms looked pretty slick. The picture on the homepage showing KG driving to the lane shows the Italy-special Celtics uniforms on display. For those interested in purchasing the jersey, good luck finding a place online that sells it. I bet a few strays will be hitting eBay soon.

  2. KG was so DOMINANT in the low-post, .pretty much unstoppable down there, on the other end him and perk shut the paint down, terrific passer too, he opens up everything. 7 Foot anchor on both ends, terrific.

Ray and Paul are great passers too, all 3 have great character and different types but great leadership. 3 team players, Vintage Pierce that game dominated a stretch and looked great slashing and attacking the hoop while keepin the defense true due to his outside shot. Ray missed his outside shots (looked to be thrown off being that open for the first time in over 10 years), but looked great on his drives to the hoop and finishes as well as his passing and playmaking. Rondo hit his outside shots and looked good, and Eddie House looked great at backup Pointguard. Posey and T Allen played good Defense and Scal did too, the bench is very underrated and the whole team looked very good on defense from mid2nd quarter on. They looked great, gonna be a powerhouse and should be a SPECIAL team for the next 4 or so years.
