Celtics down the Timberwolves in London

The Celtics defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in London’s 02 Arena 92-81 in Kevin Garnett’s first game against his former team. The C’s are now a perfect 2-0 in preseason play, while the Timberwolves fell to 1-1.

Garnett contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots in 29 minutes, but the real story of the game was the play of guard Ray Allen. Allen scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting (.786). He was lethal from beyond the arc, nailing 5 three’s in 8 attempts. The only other Celtic in double figures was center Kendrick Perkins, who added 11 in 24 minutes. (Full box score from

What They Said
Ray Allen:

“When you have KG in the post, everyone wants to double him. We can knock down 3s. We have so much available.”

Kevin Garnett:

“The past is the past. This is a new chapter in my life.”

Doc Rivers:

“We have three guys at the exact right time. They’ve done everything. They’ve achieved everything individually. Now they want to achieve something as a team.”

Ricky Davis:

“It was definitely a different experience seeing Kevin in green. I almost threw him the ball once, but then I saw that green jersey.”

Game Notes:

  • It was nice to see Ray Allen find his groove after a poor shooting performance in the first preseason game. He was great from downtown, which will be vital for the team this season. If he can remain lethal from beyond the arc, then the C’s will be very dangerous offensively this season.
  • The Big Three sat out the entire fourth quarter again, so it was good first to get them some more rest to get them up to game speed. It was also nice to see the 2nd team hold on to the lead as the Timberwolves got close.
  • Former Celtic Ricky Davis led his team with 18 points. Look for him to lead the team in scoring this season, as he is one of a few veteran players in Minnesota. Interestingly, Al Jefferson did not start in the game. He finished with 5 points and 6 rebounds. Theo Ratliff, Mr. Trading Chip himself, started at center and registered 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.
  • Celtics captain Paul Pierce did not shoot well, going 1-6 from the field, 0-2 from 3-point distance, and just 6-11 from the free throw line (.545). He needs to shoot well from the line during the season because he will be relied upon late in games to drive to the hoop and draw a foul. But hey, it’s just the preseason. He can work the kinks out. There’s a long way to go…

One comment for “Celtics down the Timberwolves in London”

  1. It’s good to see Ray shooting well from behind the arc. The question is, can he sustain it? I just have memories of Antoine firing up 3s all game and the Celtics losing by 20 points or more. Although now we have more scoring options on this team which should allow for more higher percentage shots as Ray said.
