The Celtics did not remain perfect Saturday, falling to the Philadelphia 76ers 96-78. Their record drops to 3-1 (4-1 if you count the shortened game against the Nets) while the Sixers improved to 1-4. Two members of the Big Three, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, did not suit up for the game. In their absence, Ray Allen led the team with 16 points.
Center Kendrick Perkins also did not play. The C’s featured a starting lineup of Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Brian Scalabrine and James Posey at the forward positions, and Leon Powe at center. The Celtics led 56-54 with less than 7 minutes to play in the third quarter, but lost the lead for good soon thereafter. The C’s were never that close at the end of any quarter, down by 10 in the first, second, and third quarters before losing by 18.
What They Said
Doc Rivers on Rondo playing all preseason:
“Rajon’s young – he needs the work.”
Stat Line of the Game: Rajon Rondo
- I guess we can’t get lulled into a false sense of reality with the Celtics. They can’t win every game, but I guess its good to know they hung in there midway through the third without 3/5 of their starting lineup (Perk, KG, Pierce). Just know this is just the preseason, Doc didn’t care if he won or lost that game. He only cared about the development of his players, which is all he should care about.
- On that point, Rondo showed a little bit of his development in the game. He played just about 30 minutes, and put up stats across the board. He had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. He could seriously be at the top of the league in steals by the end of the year because he has such quick hands. As far as the other elements of his game (shooting, rebounding, passing), it remains to be seen how effective he is. I think he’s a naturally good passer, but his youth may lead to some mistakes during the season.
- Leon Powe had a nice game starting at center for the Celtics, scoring 5 points to go along with 7 rebounds. He also had just one personal foul in 20 minutes. How come he can play 20 minutes with just 1 foul and Perk would’ve probably had 3 in that time. I know Perk is more agressive and better at getting to rebounds, but he has to be careful this season. If Perk can play 30 minutes per game, this team will be pretty damn good…and very hard to beat.
