Big Papi Struggles A Cause for Concern?

A lot is being made over David Ortiz’s “struggles” over the first two games. At 0-7 with one walk, Ortiz did not shine (that’s for sure). In the third game of the series on Wednesday night, however, he delivered the only RBI of the game when he lined a single over Robinson Cano’s head. While he also hit the ball hard in his first at bat, Ortiz produced nothing the rest of the game, and is just 1/11 so far (.091 AVG).

Ortiz is under a microscope right now, and other than a home run against the Twins at the end of the spring, he isn’t offering too much promise leading into the regular season. It’s too early to tell though. As you may remember, he got hot in the second half last season, even though he killed the Sox production in April and May.

People have a right to be talking about Papi’s issues. Every time he gets up to the plate, the elephant in the room is the fact that he’s hurting the Sox if he’s not putting up the numbers he’s paid to put up. No one wants Papi at the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Not right now at least.

Papi has every right to blow up in Tuesday night’s post-game talk with reporters, but he shouldn’t be suprised. This season weighs in large part on how well Boston’s offense performs, and Papi is one of the biggest worries. Ever since the 2007 playoffs, he hasn’t been the same player.

Food for thought: Mark Texeira is batting miserably right now, even worse than Ortiz. No one’s worried. And ironically, Ortiz was the only production the Sox got out of their offense on Wednesday night. But, if the Sox can’t put up runs against a No. 3 pitcher in Andy Pettite, whom they’ve seen more than any other pitcher in the league, Ortiz may not be the only issue.
