Only one new team has fought into the race in the last week, but a huge amount has still changed, including two new division leaders and a new AL leader (nearly MLB leader). Cleveland’s once mighty lead is now down to percentage points. The Yankees still can’t figure out Boston. St. Louis and Arizona are still in there. Detroit and even Seattle are still on the fringe too. Even the Twins are only the 3rd worst team in the majors now. With so much going on, let’s look at what would happen if the playoffs started as of Monday, June 13, before the day’s games:
Philadelphia‘s back on a winning streak, thanks to the Cubs. San Francisco had a tough series in Cincinnati, but they’re still ahead out West for now. With Philly’s Big Three ruling the rotation, San Fran’ll have quite a difficult time making headway.
Thanks to a sweep of the Redbirds, Milwaukee is leading their division. But thanks to six straight victories, the Braves have equaled Milwaukee’s 38-28 record. This series has all the makings of a five-gamer in it, though Milwaukee does have former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke, and Yovani Gallardo at that. If it comes down to pitching, which things usually do, Milwauke has the slight edge.
How good is Boston lately? Two sweeps in New York in a month? Granted Toronto just laid over, but if you can stabilize the pitching and combine it with those bats, it’s a recipe for another World Series ring. Texas has been playing .500 lately, and they lost thrice to the previously horrendous Twins. This’ll be a much different series than to begin the season.
Cleveland has lost nine of its last 10. And the Yankees have been winning a nice amount lately, thanks to taking the first three games of a four-game set against the Tribe. With the way the Indians have been struggling lately, there’s really no way they can make it past New York’s raw power.
