Connelly’s Top Ten: NFL Refs Are Back / Sox Are Done / Pats Losing Record

Blanket Dinner – $60 for three course meal, band, great speaker (Jeff Idelson – President of Baseball Hall of Fame) and help a charity on 10/6 at 6:00 at Doubletree in Cambridge

1. Patriots:

* The last time the Patriots have lost a game by more than one score – 31 games ago against the Cleveland Browns 34-14
* Wes Welker is on pace for 85 receptions / 1,339 yards
* In theory, the Patriots should be 3-0 (holding on Gronk in Cardinals game / everything in Ravens game)

2. Red Sox:

* Tuesday night Boston’s lineup salaries $14.5mm / Tampa Bay $34mm (Nava, Ciriaco, Pedroia, Ross, Gomez, Lavarnway, Valencia, Lin and Iglesias)
* Red Sox right now are looking at the 8th pick
* Love to see the Red Sox sweep Yankees

3. Around MLB:

* Carlos Gonzalez, Robinson Cano, Dexter Fowler, Aaron Hill, Alex Rios, Paul Konerko are all within three points of hitting .300 for the season
* Adam Dunn has struck out 42% of his at bats (211 to 518)
* What happened to contact? ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY major leaguers will strike out at LEAST 100 times this year
* Only four hitters will have over .400 OBP – Joe Mauer, Prince Fielder, Buster Posey and Andrew McCutchen
* Justin Verlander is leading baseball in complete games with SIX

4. Around NFL:

* The NFL could have turned in empties from one Sunday’s of tailgating across the NFL and paid for the real refs
* Baltimore has a nerve giving the real refs a standing ovation after the replacements handed them a game Sunday
* Mark Sanchez has a QB rating of 78.3

5. Around College Football:

* Lock bets – Penn State getting 1 point over Illinois / San Jose giving 2.5 over Navy) / And sort of like South Florida getting 17 from Florida State
* Game of the Week – Baylor at West Virginia – lot of points to be scored by a lot of skilled players
* Why not to promote coordinators to head coach (no not Spaz again)? John Smith of Arkansas who is $25,000,000 in debt, filed bankruptcy and keeps calling his team Alabama

6. Celtics:

Celtics ranked on the NBA Player Rankings on ESPN – I think its the most depth they have had since 1986 but still not good enough to match up against Miami or Lakers

12. Rajon Rondo
21. Kevin Garnett
29. Paul Pierce
81. Jason Terry
97. Brandon Bass
106. Avery Bradley
116. Courtney Lee
172. Jeff Green
247. Jared Sullinger
340. Chris Wilcox
389. Fab Melo
391. Jason Collins
467. Kris Joseph

7. Amazing Stats:

RA Dickey won his 20th game on Thursday – what other knuckleballers have won 20 games in a season?

* Wilbur Wood for Chicago White Sox in four straight years 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 (22, 22, 24, 24)
* Phil Niekro for Atlanta 1969, 1974 and 1979 (23, 20, 21)
* Joe Niekro for Houston in 1979 and 1980 (21 and 20)

8. Old School:

The Patriots game was one call away from being a blow out when Julian Edelman was called for offensive interference with the Patriots on their way to making it 20-0. Reminded me a fraudulent call made on Troy Brown in the first half of the AFC championship game vs. Colts in 2006:

* With 4:32 left in the first half and the Patriots driving to the Colts 19 yard line leading 21-3, Brown was called for a bogus push off away from the ball eventually pushing them out of field goal range and giving the ball back to Manning who moved the ball and got momentum for second half – Colts won 38-34

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Best short stories:

* The Rockinghorse Winner
* The Sniper
* The Lottery
* The Most Dangerous Game
* The Gift of the Magi

10. Randomocity:

* After watching Irish Football, why not make an American Football field goal more challenging by kicking the ball from whatever spot the ball was touched down on the previous play – even on the sideline
* I’m still amazed with hazing such a problem in high school and college that pro teams continue to glorify it.
* Boardwalk Empire off to a slow start

  1. if bradley can get healthy, he’ll move up that ranking from ESPN next year. never thought i’d be a believer in bradley, but you can’t ignore how he and rondo were destroying teams defensively last year. it really was beautiful.

    REPLY – MPC – The fact that he developed a jump shot changed everything

    What? You’re not fascinated by the story-line involving Margaret & her charity work? You know, it really makes her feel empowered. Yawn. This is what happens when you create a huge hole in the show when you kill half the show with the killing off of Jimmy Darmody.

    REPLY – MPC – Raw milk is an issue
