Connelly’s Top Ten: Bobby V and 2012 Season Done, Blanket Dinner 4 Days

Bobby Valentine

Blanket Dinner – 4 Days to go – $60 for three course meal, listen to Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson and help the homeless (where – Doubletree in Cambridge / 6:00 Tuesday)

1. Red Sox Epilogue:

* In reality, the Red Sox traded Jonathan Papelbon and Josh Reddick for Andrew Bailey, Ryan Sweeney and $5mm
* My pick for manager from the group listed on ESPN: 1. Dave Martinez / 2. Brad Ausmus / 3. Bill Mueller
* Red Sox were 16-42 after July 31st
* Red Sox were 20 games under .500 in the AL East
* Another note on the manager – best thing that ever happened to John Farrell’s image is when Clay Buchholz said he was afraid of him (best thing that happened to Bill O’Brien was yelling at Tom Brady)
* Alfredo Aceves was second in baseball with 8 blown saves
* Red Sox were intentionally walked 27 times, which is 25th in MLB
* Red Sox were 29th in drawing walks (did Theo have that much impact?) with 428
* Red Sox pinch hitters hit .185
* Red Sox starters 48-72 / 5.19 ERA
* Red Sox top arms in bullpen ERA’s: Daniel Bard 16.20 / Andrew Bailey 7.04 / Mark Melacon 6.20 / Alfredo Aceves 5.36
* Red Sox had 72 quality starts (44%)
* Red Sox threw out 20% of base stealers and allowed 127 stolen bases (Arizona allowed 48 and threw out 37)
* Amazingly Baltimore and Boston had the exact opposite records: 93-69 O’s / 69-93 RS —– 47-34 at home to 34-47 / 46-35 on road to 35-46
* Red Sox and Marlins have to flip for the 5th pick in the draft
* How bad were Ryan Lavarnway (.157) and Jose Iglesias (.118) with the bat? Nick Punto and Darnell Macdonald had higher batting averages (.200 / .214)
* Red Sox were so bad that Marlon Byrd only hit one home run in 100 at bats – and he was on the juice!
* Who’s the idiots? Werner, Henry and Larry might look the part, but the Sox had 3,043,003 in attendance in 2012.
* All is not lost – John Lackey is back next year!

2. Around the MLB:

* The middle of the Yankee infield had 412 hits
* Former left side of the Red Sox infielders Marco Scutaro and Adrian Beltre combined for 384 hits
* Ichiro has 2,606 hits now
* Ichiro has played in at least 161 games in eight of his last nine seasons
* Miguel Cabrera led baseball with 44 home runs (would have placed him 10th in 2001)
* The bottom 12 teams in walks did not make the playoffs

3. Patriots stuff:

* Patriots are 17-25 lifetime vs. Broncos (1-2 in playoffs)
* Patriots only have one away game across the Mississippi this year
* Rob Gronkowski has 31 TD in 36 games

4. College Football:

* Great weekend of games: Georgia vs. South Carolina / West Virginia vs. Texas / Miami vs. Notre Dame / LSU vs. Florida
* Another really good game (seriously): Louisiana Monroe vs. Middle Tennessee State
* U Mass has been underdog this season in every game by the following spreads: 21 / 14 / 45.5 / 24 / 23.5 / 17
* Lock – Miami of Ohio getting 20 from Cincy
* Maybe Lock – Air Force giving 8 to Navy (and under 54.5)

5. Bobby V:

Meet Rick Pitino, Butch Hobson and Dave Lewis…

6. ESPN’s Broke:

Broke on ESPN was a fascinating documentary in which the director could have done more with the material he was handed.

7. Amazing Stat:

With a cherished Boston sports milestone topped by Miguel Cabrera – Yaz’s 1967 Triple Crown – what other awards or milestones do Boston fans cherish:

* Ted Williams – .406 average
* Bill Russell’s 11 rings
* Bobby Orr leading the league in scoring from defense position
* Tom Brady- 50 touchdowns

8. Old School:

Peyton Manning vs. Patriots at Foxboro in postseason – 77-136 (56%) / 2 TD to 6 INT / Avg 274 yards

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

Injuries from celebrations – Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer was hurt jumping on the mound with his teammates.

Who else has been hurt in celebrations:

* Aubry Huff hurt his knee celebrating Matt Cain perfect game
* Kendry Morales jumping on home after a walk off home run
* Marlins Chris Coghlan trying to hit his teammate with a pie in the face
* Martin Grammatica after a field goal kick
* Gus Ferrotte head butts a wall after scoring a touchdown and hurts his neck

10. Randomocity:

* Watched Almost Famous again – under-rated movie / underrated cast: Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jimmy Fallon, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Paquin, Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
* Lets revisit one of the top five national anthems of all time –

* Football should start calling touchbacks on ball carriers who reach the ball to the pylon and lose it through the end zone
* Sports Illustrated had two stories this week of heartbreak and overcoming odds: Manti Te’o of Notre Dame lost his grandmother and girlfriend in the same week last month / Davey Johnson of the Nationals has lost two children
* Neither the Cars or Boston were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – again!

  1. Gramatica injury an all-time laugher. Those silly Gramaticas.

    One can only hope that the Sox pay with horrid attendance next year… but you know… not likely.

    REPLY – MPC – They are silly / pink hats probably lining up right now

    See you at Blanket Dinner!

  2. “Who’s the idiots? Werner, Henry and Larry might look the part, but the Sox had 3,043,003 in attendance in 2012”.

    The real idiots are those who receive their Season Ticket applications and re-up for another “bridge year”. 80 Wins tops in 2013.

    REPLY – MPC – I bet one of their most profitable years of their decade
