Josh Hamilton to the Angels Changes Everything in the American League

Josh Hamilton watches another Home Run

Major League Baseball beware. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are fully loaded, and will not back down to anyone. Last season’s Angel lineup featured Rookie of the Year winner Mike Trout as well as homerun hitting sluggers Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo. Combine those all-stars with solid pieces in Howie Kendrick, Kendrys Morales, and Vernon Wells and you are looking at quite a lethal lineup. How could a lineup such as that get any better? How about you add Josh Hamilton.

Hamilton’s recent production

The Angels ranked among the top three in almost every offensive category last year, including Batting Average, Hits, Slugging Percentage, OPS, RBI’s, and Runs scored, and with the addition of Hamilton, it is hard to see these statistics taking a negative hit. Hamilton ranked second in Home Runs (43), RBI (128), and Slugging percent (.577). The 2010 American League MVP has dominated the Major Leagues ever since combing for 100 homeruns and 322 RBI’s.

One could argue that both Hamilton and Pujols are currently the two best pure hitters in the game. They both have the ability to make your jaw drop with the offensive numbers they can throw up on a day-to-day basis. And of course, the league’s brightest young star, Mike Trout, looks like the second coming of Willie Mays.

Effect on rest of the League

I think it goes without saying that the Angels truly cashed in, and by taking the eyeball test, there is tough to find many flaws in this lineup. Now how does this affect the Red Sox and the rest of the American League you would ask?

With the exception of the Blue Jays and Angels, no team in the American League has made major franchising-changing moves, and as a result, there looks to be new dominant teams in the AL, a league that is so frequently dominated by the same teams. With the Hamilton addition, the Red Sox, as well as every other team that has struggled in recent seasons, have dropped the ball yet again. Look out Major League Baseball, here come the Angels.
