Connelly’s Top Ten: Celtics Win Despite Pierce, Rondo Joins Orr and Brady

1. Celtics win in double overtime but still stink:

* Danny should have traded Rondo when I told him to
* Paul Pierce had 32 offensive plays in the game – 16 were negative (10 missed shots / 6 turnovers)
* Paul Pierce in the fourth quarter and overtimes – 5 turnovers / 2 fouls / 3-8 shooting / dribbled out the shot clock / and got lost on defense
* Paying special attention to Jeff Green – he has no idea what he’s doing – complete failure (Doc was pulling his hair out)
* I would let Courtney Lee play 35 minutes for ten games
* Minnesota has four point guards – Rubio, Rindour, Alexy Shved and Jose Juan Barera
* With no scorers on the floor in the overtime – why not go back to Sullinger?
* The two teams were a combined 10-43 from three point land

2. Boston’s Greats in Postseason:

Relevant to the anti-Brady talk in the postseason recently:

Russell…………..165 games / 12.8 points / 19.7 rebounds
Bird………………164 games / 23.8 points / 10.3 rebounds / 6.5 assists
Havlicek…………172 games / 22.0 points / 6.9 rebounds / 4.8 assists
Ted Williams…..7 games / .200 average / 0 HR / 1 RBI
Pedro……………6-4 / 3.46
Yaz………………17 games / .369 average / 4 HR / 11 RBI
Brady……………24 games / 42 TD to 22 INT / 248 yards a game
Orr……………….74 games / 92 points (26 goals / 66 assists)
Neely……………93 games / 89 points (57 goals / 32 assists)

3. Non-super Boston Super Stars (in honor of Paul Pierce):

* Paul Pierce
* Drew Bledsoe
* Andre Tippett
* Russ Francis
* Irving Fryar
* Jim Rice
* Josh Beckett
* Joe Thornton
* Glen Murray
* Robert Parish
* Antoine Walker

4. Receptions per touchdown (Brady era):

Randy Moss………….. 5.18
Aaron Hernandez…..9.72
Deion Branch………. 13.66
Troy Brown…………..17.96
Wes Welker…………. 18.10

4. With Rondo going down – other Boston athletes with knee injuries:

* Bobby Orr
* Tom Brady
* Gord Kluzak
* Carlton Fisk
* Wes Welker
* Tony Allen
* Mayor Menino

5. Patriots:

* Would you be bold and trade Gronkowski even up for Darrelle Revis?
* Did you read where the Toronto Argos GM said that the Patriots got a first round value for nothing in the Armond Armstead pick up?
* Wouldn’t it be Belichickian to draft Teo with his reduced draft value – 3rd round
* Gonna be tough to watch the Ravens in the Super Bowl – uggh!

6. Proposed NBA Trade:

I checked with trade checker on NBArealGM and this trade would work to the cap slots (before I heard of Rondo’s injury):

* To Boston Kevin Love, Tyreke Evans and Luke Rindour
* To Sacramento (new star for their Seattle launch) Rajon Rondo, Fab Melo and Celtics first round pick
* To Minnesota Demarcus Cousins, Brandon Bass, Jimmy Fredette

7. Amazing Stat:

How many of the NBA’s top 30 salaried players made the All Star team – 9:

Made it – Kobe Bryant, Zach Randolph, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony ($171mm)
Didn’t Make it – Gilbert Arenas, Brandon Roy, Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, Pau Gasol, Elton Brand, Deron Williams, Paul Pierce, Andrew Bynum, Rudy Gay, Derrick Rose, Rashard Lewis, Al Jefferson, Carlos Boozer, Baron Davis, Andre Iquodala, Manu Ginobli, Marc Gasol, Eric Gordon, Kevin Love ($352mm)

8. Old School:

Obama came out and questioned the saftey of football which is reminiscent of Theodore Roosevelt outlawing college football 100 years ago after many deaths

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

My annual suggestion that the Patriots should draft Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija with a 7th round pick:

* Danny Ainge chosen by the Celtics (playing for Blue Jays) with 2nd round pick – 31st
* Bo Jackson chosen by the Raiders (playing for Royals) with 183rd pick
* Bob Hayes chosen by the Cowboys (track star) with 7th round pick 88th
* Gene Conley chosen by the Celtics (pitcher) with 10th round pick 90th overall

10. Randomocity:

* Harvard Basketball is 10-6 after starting the season with top 20 hopes prior to cheating scandal
* Who is a bigger fraud: Lance Armstrong or Al Gore – Gore recently sold his television station to Al Jazeera for $100,000,000, joining the ranks of Jane Fonda and Benedict Arnold
* Pau and Marc Gasol make a combined $33mm and neither made the All-Star team
* 15 NBA teams don’t have representatives in the All Star game
* I love prime time golf from the west coast
* LoLo Jones wins gold at World Championship in bobsledding – I’m happy for her – press killed her after the Olympics
* Pedro is the third greatest Red Sox of all time
* When Paul Pierce is the 17th highest player in the NBA ($16.7mm) doesn’t make the All Star team – shouldn’t the local Boys Club get a check from the headband wearer?

  2. While I agree with your list of non-super Boston Super stars, I would put Pierce, Rice, and maybe Parish on a higher list than the rest of those guys.

    REPLY – MPC – A higher list of non super star?

  3. $100M can sure buy a lot of Hash & Prius’ for Al Gore III.

    What’s your take on the Globe article about Robert Parish wanting to be an NBA coach but needs a high six or seven figure salary to do so?

    REPLY – MPC – Parish is one of the luckiest athletes of all time – beside being granted height he played on the weak side of a top 5 all time player and the greatest low post player of all time / he then was stupid enough to have drugs mailed to his house if I remember right and then from reports his wife had a habit of “bruising” I would hire him to sit people

  4. Your disdain for Paul Pierce unjustified, and a bit mean-spirited. Age catches up with all of them eventually. Paul was a durable, consistent All-Star forward for the team for many years. He gave great effort at both ends of the floor. lists Barry, Dantley, Wilkins, Havlicek as the most similar players, and I think that is absolutely the appropriate peer group for Paul. (Pippen probably another SF of that quality.) Are those guys “superstars”? I guess it is a question of nomenclature. They are certainly “stars” that are good enough to be the #2 player on a title team.

    You need to give the “new big 3” their props!

    REPLY – MPC – The second big 3 got a championship (Game 7 vs. Cleveland was Pierce’s greatest moment) and a Game 7 but other than that I think he has always been a numbers guy who doesn’t deliver – no one in the NBA would ever trade Pippen or Havlicek or Barry or Wilkens for Pierce – maybe over the top but I’m investing in that game Sunday and he is allowing his player to get to the board, throwing passes away and generally stinking the place up – if he’s washed up then he’s Jim Rice refusing to wear glasses

  5. > Gore recently sold his television station to Al Jazeera for $100,000,000, joining the ranks of Jane Fonda and Benedict Arnold

    You are way off base here–in fact, its hard for me to see how you could be further off base unless you are deliberately being “obtuse”. We are not at war with Al Jazeera. In fact, by watching more Al Jazeera, we could learn a lot about the mideast and the way people who live there think and feel. Unfortunately, as a nation, we are fairly ignorant about that part of the world, and learning more could only benefit us, especially considering our historical dependence on mideast oil. The sale of Current TV to Al Jazeera will likely benefit the USA by educating us and giving us a global perspective. Conversely, had Current been sold to the only other suitor (Glenn Beck’s network), it certainly would have harmed the USA by further spreading false and inflammatory claims.

    REPLY – MPC – Please don’t be naive – Al Jazeera has been a propaganda machine for terrorist for years. They provided a vehicle for terrorists to spread their message of hate and evil. And if that represented 1% of their broadcasts its 100% to much. This guy wanted to be president (after Love Story and inventing the internet and then talked about the world and used more energy than any house in Tennessee and then made a move on the massage girl)and now he is profiting off a virtual arm of hate

  6. Couldn’t agree more about Pierce. While most superstars make those around him better, Pierce is the opposite…… He makes Everyone worse. Ainge should’ve got rid of him last year while he had some worth. He is/has been slow and always out of shape. Now he’s slow, old, out of shape and doesn’t care. The wheelchair game was all anyone should need to tell you what a pos he is.

    I hope Al Gore’s flight to Davos runs out of gas and is forced to land in Western Africa where he is eaten by Cannibals. He’s extorted more money from American Corporations than the Gambino’s, Columbo’s, Bonano’s, Genovese and Luchesse’s combined. Hypocrite!

    As for Al Jazeera they are just as bad as the NYT. Both hate America.

    Mike, reading your column is like reading Will McDonough in the old days. You should be writing for a major publication.

    REPLY – MPC – To be linked at all with one of the greatest sports writers of our time is an amazing compliment – thank you! The wheelchair game / the debacle in Indiana / the surley behavior is the real Pierce in my estimation. Excellent point about others around him – he’s the anti Bird
