Connelly’s Top Ten: Snow A Comin’

The Patriots defeat the Raiders 16-13 in overtime in the Snow Bowl of January 19, 2002 (

1. Great Snow Moments:

* Patriots vs. Raiders – Tuck of God and Vinatieri hits biggest kick in NFL history
* 1978 Beanpot is snowed under during the blizzard
* Teddy Bruschi interception 2003 vs. Dolphins – crowd throws snow up in the air
* Snowball fight between Jeff Daniels and Lauren Holley

2. Celtics:

* Pierce was stepping into his shots to start the night
* Lakers 5-23 from three point land – that’s just lazy
* Lakers are in deep trouble (Phil Jackson loving it)
* Kobe Bryant has hit more amazing shots than anyone in NBA history
* 5-0 without Rondo – is anyone gonna say Michael was right about trading him?

3. Bruins:

B’s are 7-1-1 in their first nine – how did they do in their first nine in the last three Stanley Cup years:

* 2010 – 7-2
* 1972 – 5-3-1 (including loss to the California Golden Seals and their white skates)
* 1969 – 6-2-1

4. Top Ten Stadiums in America:

1. Fenway Park
2. Lambeau Field
3. Augusta – the Masters
4. Kentucky Derby
5. LA Coliseum
6. Madison Square Garden
7. Wrigley Field
8. The Big House – University of Michigan
9. The Palestra Court
10. Hayward Field in Oregon

5. Tim Thomas:

The Bruins got a second round pick for Tim Thomas – haven’t had much luck in the second round dating back 60 years:

*2003 – Patrice Bergeron
* 1991 – Jozef Stumpel
* 1982 – Lyndon Byers
* 1974 – Mark Howe
* 1966 – Rick Smith

6. Garnett-Jefferson:

In 2007, Kevin Garnett was traded for Al Jefferson – how has each done over this period:

Garnett……….376 games / 4,059 points (10.7) / 3,124 rebounds (8.30)
Jefferson………400 games / 7,720 points (19.3) / 4,009 rebounds (10.02)

* I still think with Pierce, Ray Allen and Al Jefferson the Celtics would have been very competitive

7. Amazing Stats:

From reader Top Cat – the other night on the Beanpot telecast it was stated that for sixty years either Boston College or Boston University have appeared in the finals – Northeastern and Harvard have never played for the title

8. Old School:

Quarterbacks that have led the league in interceptions:

George Blanda – 4 (1962 / 1963/ 1964 / 1965)
Joe Namath – 4 (1966 / 1967 / 1974 / 1975)
Norm Snead – 4 (1963 / 1968 / 1969 / 1973)
Sammy Baugh – 3 (1937 / 1941 / 1948)
Vinnie Testeverde – 3 (1989 / 2000 / 2004)

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

The Blizzard of 1978 fun facts (Wikipedia):

* 27.8 inches (33 straight hours of snow)
* 100 dead
* Wind gusts 111 mph
* 3,500 cars were abandoned on route 95

10. Randomocity:

* I would trade Gronk immediately and make it a public process in case the Patriots can’t get value and have to keep him and put him on notice that his nonsense has to stop – Pelle Lindbergh anyone?
* Isn’t the name the Expressway false advertising
* Is Brad Park’s goal against Buffalo in game six 1983 the most exciting goal in Bruins history?
* How cool was the Superstars on ABC Sunday afternoons
* Bruins had a great run from 1988 to 1992 (four Conference Finals appearances)
* It would be funny if the Red Sox truck got hi-jacked
* Is ownership’s involvement in the Red Sox the most overblown story in local sports – who cares what some finance guy says – he gives the team the money what else does he need to do?
* In 1946 Glenn Dobbs led the league in interceptions with 15. I once interviewed him and he told me his high school coach gave him the best advice on reading defenses “don’t throw the ball to the guys in the other shirts.”
* Tim Thomas gets a lifetime pass – if you boo him – you and the Vinatieri and Damon booers should be cast to sea

About Michael

Lifelong Boston resident who finds equal enjoyment in celebrating the local team's success as I do complaining about their failures. I have been writing the Top Ten for the last decade as well as five sports books: 26 Miles to Boston, Rebound, The President's Team, The Great Book of Boston Sports Lists and NBA List Jam.

  1. I would have more respect for Thomas if he signed with Montreal when his contract was up.
    He quit on the team that gave him a chance in the NHL.
    Damon & Vinatieri never quit on their team.

    B’s-Buffalo was game 7. (remember it well) I almost jumped through the ceiling.

    REPLY – MPC – I’ll cheer for him – he’s nutty but the run he went on was a thrill for Boston / Park’s goal was preceeded by Danny Ainge getting bit by Tree Rollins

  2. Timmy embarrassed the team by refusing to go on the trip to the White House. That to me is enough to boo him for all eternity.

    REPLY – MPC – I agree he was a bad teammate on that day – but with that said his crazy run to the Stanley Cup is one of the great runs (yaz 1967) in Boston sports history giving us an amazing two plus months – for that he should be thanked

  3. Gronk is not doing drugs, getting in fights, drunk driving, raping women, or otherwise breaking the law. He’s just having some harmless fun, and most of us are having fun along with him. Viva la Fiesta!

    REPLY – MPC – I had commented on him before Super Bowl that the fact he can’t stay on the field and his injuries have cost the Patriots two Super Bowls – all the more reason to stay low profile. I agree as far aw we know drugs, fights and other mischief aren’t occurring but ask Derek Lowe, Vin Baker, Mickey Mantle, Derek Sanderson, etc about the drinking thing and party circuit beat them up over time

  4. You were apparently right about trading Rondo

    REPLY – MPC – Thats the nicest thing you’ve ever replied

  5. Big fan, but Garnett didn’t avg 10.7 points as a celtic. lowest in a season was 14.3 in ’09/10.

    REPLY – MPC – Good help

  6. Hello there! This article couldn’t be written much better! Going through this article reminds me of my previous roommate! He constantly kept preaching about this. I am going to forward this information to him. Pretty sure he will have a good read. Thank you for sharing!
