Connelly’s Top Ten: Let the Playoffs Commence (again)

1. Bruins:

* I feel any team that plays for their conference championship has had a successful season
* Neidmeyer dead, Wormer dead, Matt Cooke dead
* Crosby-Louganis
* Malkin, Letang, Crosby, Iginla, Neal are all averaging more than a point a game in the playoffs
* Matt Cooke with 18 penalty minutes so far in 11 games (I want Cam Neely to come out and shove his head into the boards like he did to Claude Lemeiux)

2. Red Sox:

* Daniel Nava is leading the team from 7th inning on at .327 and has 4 HR’s in 49 at bats
* Ortiz is hitting .378 with runners in scoring position
* Portland, Pawtucket and Boston are all in first place
* High pitch counts: Buchholz 116 / Dempster 127 / Lester 124 / Lackey 109 / Dubront 113

3. Celtics:

Winning percentage the last five years from 2008 to 2013: .805 / .756 / .610 / .683 / .591 / .506

4. Patriots:

* Should have gone with my trade of Gronk for Larry Fitzgerald
* Aaron Dobson not signed yet – still don’t like the way he pushed the ref after his amazing catch
* Welker is still doing hair commercials in the Boston market
* Does Bill bring Urlacher in to the mix in November?

5. Dodgers update:

Gonzalez, Punto and Crawford – .314 avg / 13 HR / 61 RBI ////// Beckett – 0-5 with 5.19 ERA

6. Vegas Odds:

* Red Sox moved up to 12th to win World Series at 12-1
* Bruins last to win Stanley Cup at 5-1
* Patriots first to win Super Bowl at 5-1

7. Amazing Stats:

University of San Diego slugger Kris Bryant’s stats: 211 at bats / 12 doubles – 3 triples – 31 home runs / 62 RBI / 69 BB or HBP ( – some say the best year in college baseball history considering the negated bats

8. Old School:

Hope Thomas Vokoun doesn’t pull a Kenny Dryden or Bernie Parent on us:

1971 – Dryden against Bruins – 4-3 with goals against of 3.30 / Bruins averaged 5.12 a game during regular season
1974 – Parent against the Bruins – 4-2 with goals against of 2.20 / Bruins average 4.74 a game during regular season

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

In my constant search for coaches who don’t care about their pitcher’s throwing arms I got this from reader Wally M: Southern Maine coach Ed Flaherty marched out pitcher Andrew Richards last week in Division III World Series to throw 320 pitches in 5 days including 209 in one day in two different games – yikes!

5/24 against Milsaps – 58 pitches in 5 innings got the win

5/25 against Linfield – 11 pitches in 1.1 innings

5/26 against Webster – 42 pitches in 3 innings got the save

5/28 against Ithaca – 152 pitches in 12 innings go the win

5/28 against Linfield – 57 pitches in 3.1 innings got the loss

10. Randomocity:

* 1st round pick for Jagr – I think it was worth it
* The Revs are 4-4-4 and have scored 10 goals and allowed 9 that means there has been a goal every 76 minutes of play in their games this year
* If I’m Michael Holley I’m real concerned about his talent being wasted with no one listening any more with Salk on board at WEEI
* From 40 degrees to 90 degrees in five days
* Hangover III – a grade of B (too much Chow)
* Suspect 1 and 2’s sister arrested for drugs – sounds like the family business (they were a great addition to the country – mom, two sons, daughter)

About Michael

Lifelong Boston resident who finds equal enjoyment in celebrating the local team's success as I do complaining about their failures. I have been writing the Top Ten for the last decade as well as five sports books: 26 Miles to Boston, Rebound, The President's Team, The Great Book of Boston Sports Lists and NBA List Jam.

  1. You are so right on Michael Holley, the Salk guy is dreadful. I spent 10 minutes listening to him talk about how he only sweats out of one armpit, and havent switched back since, poor Michael H. I say we get a petition for you to take Salk’s place

    REPLY – MPC – I’m in – I’ll report on Monday!
