In a tweet that has since been deleted (of course), Cardinals’ minor league pitcher Tyler Melling accused John Lester of doctoring the baseball during Game 1 of the World Series last night.
I’m not quite sure how this suggests that there is indeed Vaseline inside Jon Lester’s glove. I’m also not quite sure how Jon Lester doctoring the baseball has anything to do with the ace of the Cardinal’s staff getting absolutely shelled, or Pete Kozma playing soccer instead of baseball in the middle infield all night, or David Ortiz hitting a two-run bomb off of their best late-inning reliever. If I were a member of the St. Louis organization, I’d be worried about other things, such as keeping Ortiz from knocking home run after home run in this series, or keeping Jacoby Ellsbury off the base paths.
Leave it to the Cardinals to complain about cheating, as if Mark McGwire never existed. For days we’ve heard about “The Cardinal Way” as if the organization is on a higher plateau than the rest of Major League Baseball. People have given this team (and their fans) a God complex. Last night we learned that this team is far from invincible, and that’s clearly made a lot of people in the Midwest uncomfortable.
