The question should be will Celtics trade Rajon Rondo next? I understand the domino effect concept by Jalen Rose, but remember Ray Allen left Boston. Allen could have come back to Boston but decided to go to Miami. If Allen didn’t go to Miami, I believe Garnett and Pierce would have stayed this year.
Since Allen did leave, it forced the Celtics to trade and rebuild. Rajon Rondo is now the face of the Celtics. Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose believe that Rondo will be shipped out of Boston if he becomes an elite guard.
Who would you get by trading Rondo, who came off a knee problem? You’re not going to get a star point guard or starting player. They would get a bench player or two and future draft picks.
Rondo is too key for the Celtics to trade right now. If you do trade, you would have to build around Jeff Green. Green isn’t ready to be a star player just yet.
They would have to go a different route like the Denver franchise. The Nuggets traded out Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups, etc., for B potential players and three draft picks. That is what Celtics will have to do. It worked for George Karl’s system, but will it work for Brad Stevens’ system? As for Stevens, this is his first year as an NBA coach.
I say the C’s should keep Rondo until next year, and see how Stevens likes the way Rondo fits in his system. If they trade Rondo they won’t get as many as 25 wins this season. Maybe they are looking for the lottery this season. They have draft picks lined up. We will have to wait and see what the Celtics do!
