Connelly’s Top Ten: Patriots Bye Week

1. Lot of former local players out there:

Paul Pierce
Kevin Garnett
Danny Woodhead
Phil Kessel
Tyler Seguin
Wes Welker
Tim Thomas

2. Stephen Drew:

Is it me or is it crazy that Stephen Drew got offered a $4.6mm raise for hitting .252 – he’s not in the top 10 Boston shortstops of all time:

1. Nomar
2. Johnny Pesky
3. Joe Cronin
4. Rick Burleson
5. Rick Petrocelli
6. Jody Reed
7. Vern Stephens
8. John Valentin
9. Alex Gonzalez
10. Marco Scutaro

3. Pierce:

I miss Paul Pierce’s last-second bricks

4. Like or similar:

* Bill Mueller is to David Patten
* Glenn McDonald is to Kielty
* Rod Rust is to Bobby Valentine
* Rick Miller is to Scott Wedman
* Napoli is to Otis of Mayberry
* Stanley Morgan is to Sam Jones
* Scotch and Sirloin is to Abe & Louies

5. Marchand:

Marchand struggling should watching some Pie McKenzie highlights: 691 games / 206 goals / 917 penalty minutes

6. Dwight Evans:

This was said the other day on the MLB Network – Dave Concepcion is on the Hall of Fame Ballot and Dwight Evans isn’t

* Dewey – 385 HR / .272 average / 2,446 hits / 8 gold gloves
* Concepcion – 101 HR / .267 average / 2,326 hits / 5 gold gloves

7. Amazing Stat:

In 1984 Larry Bird scored at least 30 points 37 times

8. Old School:

On one leg Red Sox DH Orlando Cepeda went off on 8/8/73 against the Royals with 5 hits / 4 doubles / 6 RBI

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

* Mona Lisa and Whistlers mother
* Rueben sandwich
* Corvette
* Repeat alert – Rolling Stones
* Kelley’s Roast Beef
* San Diego – stay classy
* the ice cream with the gum at the bottom
* Daffy Duck

10. Randomocity:

* From Comcast – Peter Brady turned 56
* Same line I use every year during bye week – be nice to your wife, buy her flowers this weekend, take her to breakfast
* Incognito – I’ve said for years this professional sport hazing is going to be a problem – dressing like women, carrying pick knapsacks – leads to bad stuff

  1. it’s trendy to bash stephen drew, but i’d take him back for another year. try like hell to move middlebrooks, and give bogaerts the hot corner. i liked drew’s defense… also, for all the complaints about drew’s hitting, he was in the top-5 in all of baseball in OPS for everyday shortstops.

    that doesn’t say much about the position, but still.

  2. I was with you on the shortstops until I got to Alex Gonzales. Are you kidding? He has a .290 lifetime OBP and played one year for the Red Sox! You also have Vern Stephens too low – #2 would be more like it.

    The Rolling Stones and Reubens are the things that make life worth living! Get with it!

  3. Drew is also a better all-around player than Jody Reed (superior defender, especially range, and higher career OPS), Rick Burleson and Marco Scutaro (ditto, please look it up). BA is only one small part of the picture. I’d be happy to see him back.
