While other members of the World Champion Red Sox are out searching for multi-year contracts, David Ortiz and Jake Peavy are out enjoying the spoils of their victory in October.
Ortiz will produce a show to be broadcast on MTV2. MLB and MTV2 teamed up to bring a younger audience to the game of baseball. Frankly, living in New England, I had no idea there is little interest in baseball around the country. All Bostonians seem to be talking about is how today’s kids from ages 10 and up, only really know the Red Sox to be champions and to be worth watching. The plan for Ortiz is to host interviews of current baseball players on MTV2 from the MLB Fan Cave to get the youth of America energized about baseball players and teams in their cities. It seems Big Papi wants, not only to be a Hall of Famer, but also a star on the Walk of Fame.
Peavy, on the other hand, enjoyed the duck boat parade through Boston so much that he bought the one in which he rode. The boat moved from its birthplace in Boston to its new home in Alabama. I’m not sure where in Alabama Mr. Peavy plans to motor around in this vessel. I suppose he could just take it out for a spin one day. “No, honey, I’m not going to take the car out to the grocery store today, I’m going in the duck boat.” He has a point — there is much more cargo space for all the provisions.
On the other side of town, in the offices of Scott Boras, I can just hear Jacoby Ellsbury talking to Stephen Drew. Ellsbury says, “Man, it must be nice to only worry about whether to interview Chris Davis, or Justin Verlander this week.” Drew might reply, “Yeah, the logistics of trying to get a duck boat from Boston to Alabama must be tough to plan.”
For Ortiz and Peavy, the hot stove seems pretty cool.
