Connelly’s Top Ten: Oshie Should Go To Blanket Dinner Week from Monday

One week to go to Blanket Dinner – awesome panel

1. USA Hockey:

* How about the insane shot blocking by the Americans specifically McDonough and Kessler
* if the NHL learns one thing from Olympic hockey – no commercials adds to the flow to the game and maximizes the advantage of the sport that is “the fastest on feet” – increase time between periods
* I like Ryan Miller over Quick in the finals versus Canada – better chance to steal one
* Shoot out rules favored the Americans – Russia was loaded with shooters (they didn’t even use Ovechkin)
* The punk that was in the box for the Russians twice for power play goals looks like a cold war holdover with gold chain and demented teeth – Alexander Radulov
* The Russians were much better when they knew Siberia was their destination if they lost

2. TJ Oshie became an overnight Olympic sensation – who else did:

* Jessie Owens
* 1976 American boxing team (Sugar Ray Leonard mostly)
* 1908 – John Hayes wins Olympic marathon
* Mary Lou Retton / Kelly Strug
* Rulon Gardner beats Shute
* Joan Benoit win in LA
* Wilma Rudolph
* Bob Beamon

3. What I miss in sports:

* Saturday afternoon basketball with Dick Enberg and Al McGuire
* Monday night baseball
* Sunday afternoon NHL hockey (Peter Puck)
* Saturday afternoon college hockey
* Keith Jackson doing a college football game
* Red Sox bullpen cart
* Smell of popcorn when walking up the winding ramp into the Boston Garden
* Pat Patriot

* Serbia – Ivan Boldirev – 886 points in 1,052 games
* Czech – Jagr – 1,688 points in 1,391 games

Canada – Bourque is 10th / Espo 9th
USA – Mullen is 5th / Leetch is 7th

Red Army 4 – Canadians 3
Sabres 12 – Soviet Wings 6
Soviet Wings 4- Blackhawks 2
Red Army 5 – Bruins 2 (one of the toughest tickets in Boston history)
Soviet Wings 2 – Islanders 1
Flyers 4 – Red Army 1 (When the Flyers played the Red Army team in 1976 (only time I ever rooted for the Flyers who outshot Red Army 49-13 in a blood bath)

some last words spoken before execution (

* How about this for a headline for tomorrow’s paper? French fries. Executed in electric chair in Oklahoma. – ~~ James French, d. 1966

    Sadly, the US now can’t meet Canada in the Gold Medal Game due to the bracket system used for the Olympics (no re-seeding)with the US as the #2 seed & Canada as #3 (–usa–canada-on-collision-course-194030312.html). This means the US & Canada will meet in the Semi-Finals if each wins their Quarter Finals game. It’s too bad that Finland didn’t pull the upset over Canada in OT (Price made a big save in OT). If that happened, Finland would have been the 3-seed & Canada the 4th. This would have meant that Canada would have had to play Russia (assuming a Russia win over Norway)in the Quarter Finals, & one of the hockey powers would have been eliminated without a shot at a medal. Plus, the US would then have Finland in their bracket for the Semi-Final rather than Canada. Assuming a US win there, the US would only have had to play either Russia, or Canada, or Sweden in the Gold Medal Game but only one of the expected powers in an elimination game. Now they’ll have to beat Canada in the Semi-Final,& either Russia or Sweden (possibly Finland) in the Gold Medal Game. Of course, all is mute if US doesn’t beat Czech-Slovakia winner.

    REPLY – MPC – too bad now that its all over it was a great tournament

  2. Looking at the list of Red Sox second basemen made me think. People never stop talking about how small Dustin Pedroia is, but he really isn’t any smaller than Jerry Remy, Denny Doyle, Marty Barrett or Jody Reed. Or Joe Morgan or Ray Durham – its a small man’s position.

    REPLY – MPC – As a second baseman myself – I would like to call it the skilled position
