The defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox have already begun the 2014 campaign with a 2-1 loss at Baltimore Monday, but the team took time during their off-day Tuesday to visit with President Barack Obama at the White House.
Chief among the stars for the Red Sox was David Ortiz, who notably took a ‘selfie’ with Obama, and Jonny Gomes, whose wardrobe choice was eyeopening.
Gomes, who is known to be one of the wilder members of last year’s squad, sported an American flag sport jacket/blazer and white pants at the ceremony.
While it’s basically the most patriotic thing possible he could wear, Gomes has taken some criticism.
“I’m a pretty patriotic person, whether it’s my outfit or what I stand for,” said Gomes. “I didn’t want it to be too much of a distraction. I hope it’s not. Just truly blessed for my freedom and everything that the flag stands for.”
Some feel that Gomes was disrespectful to the president, the White House, the American flag and his country for his outward display of patriotism. I’m not at all offended by it — but what did you think?
