Bruins Eliminate Red Wings, Move on to Face Habs

Milan Lucic

The Bruins once again looked stellar in their game 5 domination over the Detroit Wings to close out the series with a 4-2 win and advance. Backed by offense provided by Loui Erikkson, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic and Jarome Iginla, they looked like the overall favorites that they are expected to be in terms of securing another Stanley Cup.

Tuukka Rask had another stellar game between the pipes, with 31 saves. He needs to maintain his focus and not let distractions like being nominated for the Vezina trophy get him sidetracked.

With that being said, the Bruins, and more importantly Claude Julien, need to switch their focus to the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal made quick work of Tampa Bay in round 1, and Boston needs to recognize this. In order to defeat the Habs, Boston needs to continue to play physical, like we witnessed in game 2 and 3 against Detroit. Their main goal should be to become a thorn in the side of either Carey Price or Dustin Tokarski, depending on who they decide to start. Getting back to the physicality of the game — Boston’s defense needs to do everything in their power to protect Rask and keep guys like Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta away from the net.

The on-ice chemistry between guys like Chara, Dougie Hamilton and Torey Krug needs to be in full effect if they want to make it any further in the tournament.

Additionally, on the offensive side guys like Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand need to step it up in the next round. An overall lack of offense in the playoffs is not going to help the B’s win down the road. And where were Gregory Campbell or Shawn Thornton when you need them? Hopefully Daniel Paille will return soon and help the B’s defeat Montreal.

My prediction- Bruins win in 6

I have lived out of the greater New England area since 2008, so being able to follow Boston sports teams has given me the opportunity to experience a piece of home without actually being there. I completed my undergraduate studies at Hesser College in 2007 prior to moving to the Washington DC area in 2008. I later completed a Master's degree in criminal justice from American Military University, in which field I am currently employed. Despite living in this area for almost 6 years, I can't see myself as a local sports fan. As nice as the Nationals Park is, my heart will always be found at Yawkey way. I am brand new to, and I am looking forward to being an integral part of their mission while being able to cover my favorite sports teams on a regular basis. I look forward to fielding your questions or comments regarding my articles.

  1. “they looked like the overall favorites that they are expected to be in terms of securing another Stanley Cup.”

They did look good against an aging Wings team that shouldn’t even have made the playoffs. I think the defending champion Blackhawks who just smashed the Blues 5 to 1 to close the series has to be the favorites

  2. Boston Strong
