Connelly’s Top Ten: Back To Work We Go

1. Cliff Notes:

* Beautiful weekend – 4th of July a celebration of the greatest country known to man
* Patriots camp around the corner
* Can golf be any more boring without Tiger
* Wimbledon proved yet again that the server has too much an advantage with the rackets built as they are

2. World Cup:

* If Brazil loses – Colombian Juan Camilo Zuniga is going to receive more death threats than JFK got
* My Germany over Argentina prediction is alive
* Dan Shaughnessy said it Saturday in the paper – USA won one of four games and is being celebrated as the nations greatest team (he asked – “which one was Eruzione”)
* The elimination round is not as good as teams are playing not to lose

3. Red Sox:

* Did I read that Peavy has won one game in his last eighteen starts
* I would have traded Drew Saturday when he was halfway through his home run trot
* Take last year away from John Farrell and his coaching record 193-218
* Napoli struck out four times and hit into a double play
* Jackie Bradley might not be able to hit but he might be the best combination of range and throwing arm in Red Sox history
* Pierzynski .253 / 4 HR / 31 RBI / .285 OBP – versus – Salty .232 average / 9 HR / 27 RBI

4. NHL Draft History:

In the first round 1979 draft, the Bruins drafted Ray Bourque and Brad McCrimmon who played 2,834 combined games with a combined PLUS 972

5. Red Sox game times:

(give me a 90 minute soccer game with one goal over a five hour baseball game)

* 30 games 2 hours to 3 hours
* 50 games 3 hours to 4 hours
* 5 games 4 hours to 5 hours
* 3 games 5 hours to 6 hours

* That is eight games over 4 hours (9% of the Red Sox games)

6. Bruins are worse:

* Lost – Iginla
* Older – Chara and Bergeron
* Coming off Injuries – Seidenberg, Kelly
* Jumped the Shark – Lucic and Marchand

7. Amazing Stat:

Pedroia or Alomar?

Pedroia…..301 average / .368 OBP / .448 Slug / .991 fielding %
Alomar…..300 average / 371 OBP / .443 Slug / .984 fielding %

8. Old School:

Inflation or Insanity:

* Larry Bird – In 1985-1986 Larry Bird was MVP for the season and playoffs and received $1,800,000
* Avery Bradley – Has never made an All Star game, never played 65 games in a season and will make $8mm next year

* The diving in the World Cup is more South American than Europe

  1. Not a bigger Pedroia fan out there, but he not very close to Alomar in my book. Not that All Star Games/Gold Gloves always best gauge….ALomar went to 12 straight AS games and won 11 out of 12 GGs. Pedroia presently 4/3. He was far better postseason player .313 Avg, 829 OPS vs .247 and .728. Alomar also avg 32 Steals per 162 vs 18. Alomar tailed off early (last good season at 33) so hopefully Pedroia can catch him in 2half of his career

    REPLY – MPC – I agree but a lot closer than I though
