Connelly’s Top Ten: Trade Deadline Fun, Top of Boston Area, Left Field Mashers

1. Cliff Notes:

* Can you believe it’s August?
* Greatest Trade Deadline ever
* Is Danny Ainge really going to do nothing?
* Does Drew get booed out of the park?

2. Red Sox Trade:

I give them a B (no top 25 prospects and I think Cepedes is overrated)

Jon Lester
John Lackey
Jonny Gomes
Andrew Miller
Stephen Drew
Jake Peavy
Felix Dubront
Corey Litrell

Red Sox get

Yoenis Cepedes – OF

Allen Craig – OF
Joe Kelly – P
Heath Hembree – P
Edwin Escobar – P (56th on Baseball America top prospects)
Eduarado Rodriguez – P (65th)
Kelly Johnson
High Oakland Pick

3. Patriots:

* I love that Browner is roughing guys up – they need to get tougher
* Did the Globe just re-run the puff pieces on Thompkins from last year?
* Is Dobson alive?
* Hope Wilfork is in better shape than last year
* I wouldn’t want Ridley holding onto a grenade

4. Fenway Park as hitter’s paradise:

People are excited about Cepedes at Fenway – but Fenway is overrated as a home run park.

It’s 28th out of 30 for home runs – top 5 home runs per game:

Yankee Stadium – 1.56
Great American Park – 1.51
Rogers Centre – 1.45
Coors Field – 1.32
Dodger Stadium – 1.15

5. Top 100 prospects:

With the Sox picking up two prospects in top 100 Baseball America preseason rankings – that adds to their already players on the list:

2. Xander Bogaerts
40. Henry Owens
50. Jackie Bradley
73. Blake Swihart
74. Garrin Cecchini
75. Mookie Betts
88. Alan Webster
89. Trey Bell

6. Great vs. Great:

Jeter against Pedro:

* 29-107 (.271)
* 29 K or one every 3.6 at bats
* 6 doubles / 4 home runs

7. Amazing Stats:

Most Hat Tricks

* Wayne Gretzky……….50
* Mario Lemieux……….40
* Mike Bossy…………….39
* Brett Hull……………….33
* Phil Esposito………….32

8. Old School:

From the Great Book of Boston Sports Lists – Top ten acquisitions to hit the Green Monster (didn’t work out)

1. Dick Stuart
2. Wily Mo Pena
3. Orlando Cepeda
4. Jose Canseco
5. Danny Cater
6. Jack Clark
7. Bob Bailey
8. Walter Droppo
9. Butch Huskey
10. Rob Deer

9. Just a Little Bit Outside:

In honor of Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston – my best:

Pizza – Pizzeria Regina – North End
Donuts – Donuts Make a Difference – Medford
Chowder – Turners Seafood – Melrose
Seaport Town Not in Cape – Scituate
Cape Town – Chatham
Outdoor Dining / Drinks – Devlin’s in Brighton (I like Baseball Tavern roof before game)
Clams – JT Farnhams – Rockport
Overrated Tourist Trap – Legal Seafood and Mike’s Pastry
Best Restaurant Neighborhood – Slight nod North End over South End

10. Randomocity:

* By the way Carlos Baerga, Marquis Grissom, Yunel Escobar, Russell Martin, Greg Jeffries were 43-80 (.538) against Pedro
* PJ Axelsson is 10th in Bruins history with 797 games
* Tampa Bay got their lunch money taken on the Price trade
* From Peter Gammons on WEEI – Red Sox prospect Johnson’s mother is one of the Double Mint Twins
