In case you missed it Saturday night, Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd was drilled in the face by a pitch from Red Sox righty Alfredo Aceves. Byrd immediately hit the ground clutching his face, but was able to walk off on his own power.

He was taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation, and the Cubs placed him on the 15-day disabled list with “multiple facial fractures.” If you watch the hit (see it below), then you would understand how he could sustain facial injuries so severe.

Byrd is enjoying one of his best seasons in the majors, hitting .308 with 3 HR and 11 RBI.
