Report: Shoppach Sent Bobby V Text to John Henry from Gonzalez’s Phone

If it seemed odd that Adrian Gonzalez sent the infamous text message to John Henry complaining about manager Bobby Valentine, your suspicions were correct, according to a report from the New York Daily News.

Ex-Red Sox catcher Kelly Shoppach apparently sent the text message to Henry using Gonzalez’s cell phone, the paper reported Sunday.

Shoppach was deeply involved in writing the message along with a small group of players who were disgusted with Valentine. The group then engaged Gonzalez in conversation about Valentine, and because he was tired of all the “grumbling,” Gonzalez agreed the text coming from his phone would likely get ownership’s attention.

Sources told the paper that Gonzalez had nothing to do with the content of the text message.

“The text message was not his idea or his opinion . . . or his words,” the source said.

Instead, Shoppach and that small group of unknown players authored the text.

“All I know is that Adrian didn’t do what people are saying he did,” one Red Sox player told the paper. “He’s not like that. He’s a good team guy. He’s the kind of guy who would even cover for someone who did something wrong. He’d take a bullet.”

Gonzalez didn’t confirm or deny authoring the text message after Saturday’s game against the Yankees, saying, “I know why you’re asking, but we’re not going to talk about that anymore.”

After Saturday’s game in Washington, Shoppach denied any involvement in sending the text message.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Shoppach. “I have no influence on what they’re doing with upper management.”

Shoppach got off to a rough start with Valentine this season. In May, Valentine volunteered to the media that Shoppach was complaining about playing time, essentially throwing him under the bus. While the players do deserve blame for their attitude, you can’t blame Shoppach for ACTUALLY following the chain of command and going to Valentine first. It’s Bobby V’s fault that we all know about it now.

Shoppach was traded to the Mets the day the bombshell Yahoo! report was published on August 14.

“Let me be very careful. I think, and maybe this is as far as I’ll go with it, too, there is a disconnect in communication between the players through the upper management,” Shoppach said after the report was published.

The Red Sox nearly traded away Shoppach in late July, but didn’t like what was being offered, according to the Daily News.
