The Boston Red Sox lead the Majors with 58 wins at the All-Star break. The Red Sox are now just 11 wins away from matching their total from a season ago. Last year, we saw nut job Bobby Valentine attempt to coach a team full of Red Sox players who were out of shape and could care less, players such as Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Matt Albers, Daisuke Matsuzaka and to a lesser extent Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez was a great player, but lacked the fire and hustle it took to play in Boston.
This season the Red Sox have had their fair share of injuries, with John Lackey, Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, David Ortiz, Franklin Morales and Andrew Miller all being placed on the DL, some for an extended period of time. Miller is done for the season with a left foot ailment that will require surgery and Buchholz has been out since early June with a shoulder ailment. Dustin Pedroia is also playing with a torn muscle in his finger. Although they are beat up, the Boston Red Sox have not allowed any injuries to derail their season.
The Red Sox enter the break 58-39 under 1st year coach John Farrel with some impressive stats. The Sox are the only team in baseball with 4 players with at least 50 RBI at the break. Some other impressive stats for the Sox include having the second most strikeouts in MLB with 819. Ellsbury’s 36 SB lead baseball. The Boston Red Sox trail only the Tigers by two hits for the most in baseball with 934. The Sox do lead the majors in several categories, including most doubles with 215 and runs scored with 498. The Boston Red Sox also currently hold the 2nd best batting average in baseball, hitting .277 as a team.
Coach John Farrell has done an incredible job this year with his new team. Since the beginning of spring training, Farrell has been building relationships and confidence in his players and it has really showing on the field this year for the Red Sox. The Red Sox are set to open a 3 game series with their rivals, the New York Yankees, this Friday. The Yankees are currently 6 games back of the AL East leading Red Sox.
